Kinja'd!!!

Found this little gem on my local Craigslist and it got me thinking. Given how many of these sold and how many two wheeling OPPOs we have I figured someone here would know about them.

What is a reasonable top speed for a 1981 70cc Passport (cub to the rest of the world) with a 220lbs rider? I live in an area that’s mainly flat, but 35 and 45mph roads are the norm by me.

Are there any common issues I should look for if I go to check it out?

Asking price is $1000 which seems right inline with what I’ve seen them for near me before, but you never know till you see something in person.

DAMN!!! I want one. I would totally be able to get past the cops without a motorcycle license.

I’ve ridden a Cub90, nearly identical with a 90cc and three-speed with an auto clutch. It’s lots of fun but just remember that it’s a nearly 40 year old carburetor and auto clutch isn’t the most efficient. with a 220lb rider, I’d think 45mph is pushing it.

Must be a clone. This one is in southern Ohio.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is one like it there. I’ve seen them in this color, green, yellow and red, but I think I’ve seen more this color than any other.

Given that from 1928-2014 Honda produced over 87 million of these units, it’s likely that there are several of blue ones around DC.

I won’t be commuting with it so diverting through neighborhoods with lower speed limits wouldn’t bug me. If I can get it up to the 35-40mph range it would work.

My concern was whether my size would stick me puttering around at moped speeds where I’d be a road hazard.

Quite possibly. I thought the cub90 topped around 40-45.

I did 70km/h which is about 43mph on a CT90 on gravel.. it was terrifying.

Google Ed March, lol he’s fun to watch -

I guess if I do decide I’m too slow to be safe a 100cc big bore kit is under $200.

Yeah, that speed on something like that doesn’t sound like fun. Riding it on gravel trails sounds like it’d be a good time though.

I’d heard of Ed March. I think he was trying to raise funds for a documentary, but if it happened I haven’t seen it.

I think he’s in South America somewhere.. he went off and did a Vietnam tour earlier this spring. He updates youtube once in awhile.

I had one with a Lifan 125 (Honda clone) swapped into it. With the 125cc it would run at 50 with no trouble at all. It was not as scary as the 1966 Vespa smallframeI had with 10" wheels that would do 50. I sold it quickly for about $700 and kept the Honda motor with dreams of turning it into a lamp. It’s still in my living room on the bookshelf.

I would guess 40+ would be about it, but it would feel plenty fast. Cool bikes.

you can update the engine to a bigger capacity if you want, with a Lifan motor.
