Those are brilliant, actually, since they just fit into the existing hatchback shape. I wonder why more wagons aren’t built like that instead of sweeping the roofline all the way forwards—I guess that’s because there are fewer and fewer hatchbacks (read: fastbacks) that exist nowadays.

Yeah, they are. Actually, since more (european) cars are making the shift to having a hatchback/fastback instead of a sedan, it could work. But then again it is easier to put stuff in a normal wagon.
