Smartphone question

As you might of guessed, I’m not the most tech savy person (particularly with phones.) but here’s the question.

Every new smartphone always has a better processor. My question is: Is the processor even the limiting factor on phones? I’d always assumed it was Wi-fi/data or RAM. Since people never really do a lot of high demand task on phones, but it’s more of a number of small tasks and of course you have the restriction of Wifi/data.

Idk what the processor of most new smartphones is, but I know on my phone it’s really only slow when downloading something (which I guess could be processor limited, but I always figure it’s the data/Wifi)

Edits take to long. Or is it just to make up for the more demanding OS, since AFAIK that’s the main reason older phones get slower. Is the OS puts too much demand on them.

Hm. Good question. I’d imagine that the RAM would be the biggest bottleneck on a phone by having too many apps open or things going on, unless you’re doing a CPU intensive task. But I’m not a computer science major.

It’s often not the OS, it’s the applications.

JavaScript-based stuff is fractally terrible, almost as a rule... and that’s what everything is. Even as the JavaScript engine gets faster, the code that it’s being asked to run gets worse, more bloated, and drags everything down.

Kinja, of course, is a major offender.

My phone will never become obsolete. It finds your phone question tuberous.

Oh, I almost forgot. Ads.

Holy shit, the ad networks, and their megabytes of JavaScript (that the CPU then has to chew through).

An ad blocker is a huge performance improvement for a phone, and it’ll save you some data, too.

Now I want mashed potatoes. Damn it. This attempt at humor has backfired.

Data rate is of course the biggest bottleneck. But if you’re in range of good wifi and not cellular, then the processor speed becomes more important because of what it takes to render today’s graphic-rich pages. And for video, processor speed matters after the download. I think RAM only becomes a problem if you leave too many apps running.

Now someone who knows something will come by and embarrass me and I’ll have to blame alcohol. Better start drinking.

Better processors typically mean more processing power with even less power consumption. With new things like Augmented Reality and even more demanding apps processors coupled with better/more ram help keep things smooth without killing your battery.

Faster processors make for faster bus speeds. You can’t have that fancy RAM without the CPU to support it. SoCs(System on Chip) that are used in most phones benefit from the higher transistor density so they can make a smaller package overall or fit more into the existing packaging. Faster processor means I can run Tindr at 25% where a slower processor has to run it at 60% of overall CPU.

If it’s slow when downloading something, it’s usually the connection speed.

Install Speedtest and see what kind of up/down speeds are you are getting.

I distinctly recall being told in one of the courses in my programming associate’s degree, that “CPU and memory are cheap”.

Yeah, I did not like that instructor. (Of course, I ended up not actually getting into a programming career, realizing this shit was not for me, but hey.)
