It’s not every day you get to see a tunnel shut down but it’s daunting knowing you have a multitude of cars held up at the entrance, probably late for wherever they need to be, ready to B-line it once the lights turn green

Nope, few stragglers.

The new midtown tunnel is amazing. It’s size is massive, we have 18 wheelers easily doing 60, through it- granted the speed limit is 35. But still fun to witness.

You work with tunnels somehow?

ITS - intelligent Transportation systems.

From all of the cameras, network- fine and copper, overheight detection, traffic detection, radio and comms - basically if it has a computer or PLC attached to it it falls under my responsibility

Is the one of the the Downtown Tubes? I don’t remember it being so clean and open looking. Granted I haven’t driven through the Elizabeth river tunnels much since back when I worked at NNSY in the early 2000's. I’m still in the HR area, but now I work at the Norfolk Navy base and live in Chesapeake so I don’t really hit any of the tunnels anymore unless I’m heading out of the area.

Sure is. Once ERC won the contract back in 2012 part of it was a rehab effort for the old tubes and a brand new one for midtown. It’s worth the toll to take a pass through the old then new tunnel. The size difference and design is pretty substantial.

Nice. I’m glad to see some other HR natives around here. But yeah I remember the downtown tunnel being way more claustrophobic looking and dark. I’m glad to see that sweet, sweet toll money is actually going to good use.

I’ll definitely have to check out the new midtown. I just need to find an excuse to head over to P-town sometime soon. The last time I used it, it was still just the one tube with two-way traffic in it. I distinctly remember, because I nearly shat myself when halfway through the tunnel the semi in front of me, and one coming the opposite direction smacked mirrors and for a split second I thought they had just crashed.

Not going to say I went out of my way to avoid the midtown after that... but that was the last time I’ve used it.

Oh, yeah I forgot they removed the roofing structure which is why it seems less claustrophobic - hense why in the photo it looks rounded.

Interestingly Google Street view still has old midtown 2 way with the new midtown under construction.

The MLK expressway way is pretty impressive too, a massive joining section making a seamless pass from midtown west, MLK, 264 back east. But - mind the tolls...
