Not my coworkers car but close enough, 2003 M5. The digital display in the dash is starting to fail. Pixels are starting to drop out when the interior of the car is particularly dry. From our discussion his findings on the BMW forums he frequents point to a failure in the way the display is attached. He found a walk through on how to remove it and fix it but he is wondering if it will easier to just replace it instead of taking his dash apart twice.

Difficulty: He actually called the local BMW parts department and they said “we don’t produce/carry that part any more” you will have to go 3rd party.

Any collective knowledge I can pass along?

I’m a pro at removing taking apart the dash from my early days as a car stereo installer. So I’d be inclined to try the fix first. However a new panel is around $50 so there is definitely a case for just getting a new one. I’ve been lucky with My M3, no dead pixels yet.

You know, I had a similar issue with my RX-8 center console. I found a video on youtube on how to take apart the dash and reinforce the connections. I’d try to do that first because he can always buy another panel if it doesn’t work.

I had an E39 with the dying pixels too. Never fixed it but do know that they sell kits. Like this one:

I watched videos on it and it seemed pretty easy but it didn’t get bad enough for me to risk opening everything up and possibly making it worse. I’m pretty sure they’re sitting on the same fence.

Speaking of which i am planning on sending my 00 540i’s dash later this week. But i would send it personally. So what happens is the ribbon that attaches to the LCD strip goes bad not the LCDs. A bunch of DIYs show that you can just tape the new ribbons to the dash of radios. But i have heard it doesnt last long and you need some kind of tool to heat it to the LCD strip. Also with the dash you have to drill a couple spots to open it up to even get to the LCD screen. Also I have heard that you dont want to just get a new dash because it will send a fault in the ECU and it will trigger a Mileage discrepancy code that BMW its self will have to take off.

My dash has been bad since i got my 540i and my Radio started to go and i sent it to bavtekinc to get a feel for how they would do. They did great and i plan on sending it to them.

I’d replace it, but replace both the screen and the ribbon connector, because both can go bad.
