Looks like I’ll be attempting to get an iPhone 8 as the iPhone X is too expensive for me and won’t come in any attractive colours. As for the phones themselves, smartphones have reached the point where the only true “big” updates nowadays are the looks. Everything else is incremental. The same applies here, I didn’t get wowed by anything and I will miss Touch ID...also a reason I won’t get an X.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Rose Gold is dead, replaced with a peachy gold. Still love the colour anyway!

Kinja'd!!!

I expected worse. The iPhone 6S is also taking a delightful price dive too.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

The X only comes in white or black, presumably because every other colour looked awful.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I’d totally buy a phone with a semi-transparent rear case...but that’s not the case in that pic. The Home button is also dead, now replaced with a gesture from the bottom of the screen...sorta like a bonkers Nova Launcher.

Anyway, who’s going to plunk down $1k for this baby?

I’m with you, going for an 8. Mrs. addiction loves her headphone jack enough that she might just pick up a 6s.

I’m stuck between the 8 and the 6S myself. The 6S is all I’d need in an iPhone (plus Rose Gold), however the 8 effectively modernizes my favourite iPhone design (iPhone 4) and of course, would be up to date.

I was really disappointed in the X. Edge to edge display? Neat. But that’s all it offers over the 8 Plus.

I’m still using a 6 Plus, so I think I’ll get an 8 Plus soon. I will wait to see the X in person before I make a purchase, but I doubt it’ll take me over the edge. I’ll divert the price difference into an Apple Watch, because I think it’s time I get one.

Speaking of, I’m very curious to see how the cellular works. Being able to comfortably leave my phone at home to go on a workout is awesome, but if it’s a monthly charge that’s a hard sell.

I would go to a 7 just because of the annoying AF home button on the iPhone 6.

If you get an 8, get a screen protector. I’ve always had cases on my phones but never screen protectors. Original to the 6, I never had issues with screen scratches. The 7 though, tons of micro-scratches and I’d assume that will continue on the 8. My 7 is not handled/stored/used any differently than my previous iPhones but it’s the only one to develop these small scratches so must be the glass itself.

I’ll probably get the X when it’s upgrade time. Nothing they added was anything too new (I’m an Apple fan but will happily admit that they tend to introduce things to their phones after some others have had them for years) but I do want that screen.

Why do companies feel the need to fix wasn’t isn’t broke?

Or are they just trying to make me feel like an old man, so that’ll I’ll buy their products to feel hip and cool again?

Oh, I get glass screen protectors on every phone I buy! The exception to the rule is my current phone (Honor 5X) which despite having an unbranded glass formulation on the display has performed better at avoiding scratches than any other screen I’ve had. On the hand, fingerprints are a-plenty.

That’s a good call. I figured because of my no-screen-scratch-success on the original through the 6, the 7 would be fine. Well, now it’s at a point where there are so many that it’s a lost cause (although they are only visible when the screen is off and held at an angle, and definitely not felt). Until they fix their glass/glass coating, I’m going to go your route with the glass protectors.

I’m leaning towards the 8 Plus. I have huge hands, and the bigger chassis just fits my hand so much better.

The iPhone X is only a couple hundred bucks more than that, and while it’s not as big as the 8 Plus, it’s bigger than the regular 8. Also, the screen is nearly 6" across. Yes please.

During the keynote I was leaning more towards the iPhone X, but then they said it won’t be arriving until November...I don’t think I can wait another two months to replace my iPhone 6 with its very cracked screen and hosed battery (it lasts maybe 15 minutes).

But maybe I’ll fall in love with the X when I see one in person and say hell I’ll wait for it..

Nope, no way. I’ve bought multiple cars for less. No way. The phone I imported from China myself, about a year and a half ago (for €150), still performs flawlessly. I wouldn’t even consider an iphone if it costs a third of that $1k, mainly due to the (i)OS and the Apple brand.

The X is in no way competitive with its little siblings (especially at the 1k price point), much less other flagships. I do like the all glass back but it’s not enough to get me to switch back to IOS. Wireless charging is a nice addition, as well as the dual cameras but I just can’t see myself personally paying that much more for not much more phone.

I don’t get it either. That’s a new set of tires, an oil change, spark plugs, filters whatever... and a lot of spare cash to walk around and enjoy life. The cameras don’t offer better resolution than those on some 5 or 4 year old flagship phones which can be had for a fraction of the price brand new.

Resolution isn’t anything to write home about nowadays. High res photos mean nothing if the sensors are garbage. And up until the past couple or so years, iPhones consistently led the pack. Now their cameras are comparatively lacking, which is a shame.

Either way, I can’t stomach paying $1k for a phone. The highest I’d go is $700, or about the same cost of a new game console or a decent gaming computer if you built it yourself.

If I could have a Rose Gold iPhone 8 with that edge to edge display I’d die a happy woman! xD

One thing that has me scratching my head is that Apple could have implemented Touch ID on the back of the phone. I know I know, too Android-like. However, knowing Apple I bet they could have integrated it into the shiny Apple logo...Shoot, they could have made it glow too! Though, I guess they really want to push Face ID and reduce the number of physical buttons, so can’t blame them for it.

I mean, true tone display is the tits and all, but I can live without it on my phone; I won’t be reading any novels on it.

I’m still using the SE, and I’m not changing until I’m forced out by the phone no longer being able to run the OS, apps, etc (which, being Apple, probably isn’t that far away). The newer stuff is unnecessarily big and doesn’t have anything that makes me want them over my current phone (and no headphone jack can gtfac)

Well... At least it looks somewhat different. All small changes, nothing remarkable though. Makes me wonder what the next “big improvement” features in smartphones will be...

Just bought a galaxy s8+ because after years of giving Samsung crap, I figured it was time to give then another chance. Dropped the phone a foot (it’s slippery coming from a rugged rubber LG V10!) and the screen cracked. Very, very, badly. Bought a new screen panel and replaced it myself, but it was still a spendy fix.

No more >500 phones for me, unless it’s basically a V10+. Removable battery, SD card, hifi headphone amp, manual video controls.... I just want that, but updated with the latest camera and battery tech and smaller bezels.

Is their incessant push for fewer buttons, and more tightly controlled connectors necessary for an eventual 100% waterproof, to significant depth, phone?

(Yes, I know changing the connectors benefits Apple in many ways, including profit-related ones.)

Honestly, I wouldn’t get an X simply because under the screen(which admittedly looks really nice) it’s basically the exact same phone as the 8/8+. Its the same CPU, GPU, cameras, everything as the 8/8+. They do list it as having an extra 2 hrs of battery life, but that’s likely just due to the lower power draw of the OLED screen and not anything to do with a larger battery. If you want me to pony up for the cost of an X I need something that sets it aside from the cheaper phones besides just the screen.

I am kinda shocked they adopted the Qi wireless charging standard. I was 100% expecting them to use some non-compatible Apple only standard because reasons.

That is effectively their excuse, however Android phones have better IP ratings with way more holes in them...so it’s a bad excuse. I reckon they’re really doing it because Tim Cook/Jony Ives is imagining a future with phones without buttons or holes of any kind.
