So, is C&D trying to up it’s hip factor to mix it with the blogger crowd? Because if so, they shouldn’t. There is journalism, and there are blogs. Jalopnik and its Gawker brethren are blogs, and are written as such. A print periodical really shouldn’t sling around the expletives and in your face judgementalism that you find on much of the FP.

I wasn’t paying attention. Isn’t she a little young to have come from anywhere previous except the yearbook staff?

Car and Driver was snarky and crude for decades before lazy-ass bloggers on the internet even had pubes.

Were they? I don’t remember them being crude much, but then I never had a subscription. I only read their articles through topic-specific web searches.

I don’t know... that’s what her Twitter says. Asians tend to look younger, I guess, lol. I still get ID’ed at the liquor store even though I’m well past my 30s...

Apparently you’re not familiar with Car and Driver. They’ve always been this way.

Yes. And they’ve published worse/stranger things than the word bullshit. I particularly remember angry letters about an article that included the phrase “muscle car mating season” and a reference to ky jelly... in the 90s.

Asians do tend to look younger. They don’t gray as readily, and the men often don’t grow facial hair as much.

Anyway, I must just be showing my age. Believe Twitter over anything I say, that’s for sure.

Yeah? I didn’t notice. Then again, I only read their articles when a web search leads me to them. I don’t have any subscription.

But I don’t think professional journalists should be crude and snarky as a general matter of course. Snark should be used sparingly in print articles. There are other ways to be hip and interesting.

Online C&D and R&T seem to be very different from print C&D and R&T - the online versions came across as almost clickbaity, with little actual journalism aside from guest features (Lehto, Mr. Regular, etc.).

And yes, Kristen did come from R&T, back when I did occasionally browse it. She did most of the clickbaity stuff, as what I’d presume a low-level staffer had to do, so I didn’t have my hopes high for her stuff here. She has settled into a groove here though.

Snark and criticism are substitutes for interesting writing or good journalism.

Hence why I am a snarky asshole.

I’d be curious to see the reception to me at a liquor store. I’ve been legal for just about a year (Ontario), but I haven’t gone before (not a drinker, really), and I’m a particuarly young-looking person of Asian descent.

I did recently have a gas station clerk express disbelief that I was driving, though I got my license quickly.

I think she writes pretty well. She does have an extra dose of attitude, but that fits in well with Jalopnik. I guess to me attitude seems less warranted in young people as I get older, but as long as its not mean, I’m okay.

I have spent a lot of my adult life working with asians, mostly Chinese (both ABC and FOTB), and I think I can judge age pretty well, but the average American will likely underestimate.

We shouldn’t be crude and snarky? Damn. I’ve been doing it wrong for over a decade then.

(Disclaimer: I’m not actually crude or snarky in my actual work, but I also don’t work for as laissez-faire, free-wheeling a place as Jalopnik).

I’ve had a C&D subscription since 1999. They’ve always been snarky in the letters to the editor, one of the columns, and one or two articles an issue. It’s a schtick, but it’s also a way to mix it up along with more serious journalism and make reading cover-to-cover less tiring. On occasion it has been used to do the kind of absolutely scathing reviews of cars they didn’t like without outright calling them bad - the kind of thing that other auto magazines shy away from becuase they are afraid of not getting another press car from the automaker again (see John Phillips’ Escalade EXT reveiw, March 2002 - “There are lots of things on which you could spend $49,990. This is one of them.”) Overall I’d say they use it sparingly, but it is part of who they are. It works best when you have the full issue in print. Maybe it’s a throwback to another time, but I think we’re passed the tipping point where you can really expect a stalwart like C&D to change.

I’ll bite. I’ve had it since 1999. I wait until it expires each time and they let me renew it for under $20. I don’t anticipate it’s arrival each month or read it cover-to-cover like I used to, but they consistently knock it out of the park with photography and looking at the glossy photos in print is still something I prefer enough to a computer screen to pay less than $2 a month for. Also it’s great to have in the bag when you get stuck on a flight without WiFi.

Now... all that being said I don’t give enough of a shit about what they write to ever be bothered to write a letter to the editor.

Neither do most of us. Most work places put value on a measure of professionalism.

I think she’s pretty much the best they have right now. He attitude is a lot more pointed than some of the others who do it for clickbait or just the sake of it and her satirical stuff actually works. I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets poached by one of the more traditional outlets in short order.

Yes and to be fair, there might still be more snark than you’d like and you are free not subscribe or read. But I don’t think they’d have lasted this long if they were solely Jalopnik in print form.

Been a subscriber forever, I think. Their letters to the editor amaze me - 90% of them are either people complaining about comparison rankings, trying to correct errors in the magazine, or just old men yelling at clouds. That’s been true for the last 30 years at least.

That’s what people are telling me, but what I see is some hip language that includes the occasional colorful colloquialism without serious snarkiness. For example, this article , while including a somewhat wisecracking tone, is nonetheless written fairly professionally.
