Man seems like the 120 series forums are full of...a special kind of person.

“Hey everyone, I tried search and I couldn’t find the specific answer I am looking for:

1. can you convert the air springs to coil and keep the adjustable dampers?”

REPLY - DUD, this has been covered a billion times, do your homework. The springs and dampers are different so it will work.

“No it really hasn’t. I found a thread that mentions the problem but its not remotely clear if it works or not. The thread seems to indicate that pulling the fuses for the springs disables the dampers”

REPLY - I just answered your question, the springs and the dampers are different.

Saw Source Code gif, leaving satisfied.

But yeah, I hate how forums often have the mentality that if someone else has asked it before (even several years ago) that it’s stupid to ask that question.

I usually come around and answer their question because wow, it takes all of a few minutes to give them what they need. It’s not hard to be helpful! :)

If you’re asking about keeping the adjustable dampers/shocks, then it sounds like those are independent of the air bag/spring. Seems like converting to a coil spring would eliminate the ability to adjust ride height unless you add an aftermarket airbag inside the coil spring. But I don’t really know much of anything about those trucks or anything with IFS. *shrug

If it makes you feel any better, I posted some photos of the 40's run in the local forum as a link to a google photos album. Mainly, because the forum software is 10 years old at this point and hasn’t been updated. It only allows 6 attachments per post and doesn’t resize/thumbnail the images so many photos come in too big for the screen.

Someone was legitimately upset that the photos weren’t uploaded through the forum software and made a several posts complaining about it. Whatever.

I was scared enough of the air suspension on the Jeep that we bought the extended warranty.

I think the least helpful statement on any forum is “did you search?”, although it’s usually not phrased that nicely. Especially since I’m sure you’ve been on them awhile, it’s not like you’re a newb. It’s not like you’re asking a “what’s the largest tire I can fit stock” type of question.

It does seem like a question someone should easily be able to answer though. A simple yes/no question. It seems people are probably misunderstanding your question. You aren’t asking if it’s physically possible to keep the adjustable dampers, just that if the computer systems are separate to a point where you maintain that functionality while removing the airbag/hide adjustment.

Most forum search functions are painful to use and take days to weed through the results. If a user knows that a question has been answered before and thinks it’s so darned easy to find, the logical/decent thing to do is provide a link.

If every question has been answered before, then shut the damn forum down and archive it.

‘Mud is excellent if you own a Land Cruiser. That is, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, or 200 series. Prado, Taco, FJC, Tundra, Minitruck, not so much.

With the increase in value and popularity of Cruisers in the past several years, it’s gotten flooded with the typical “New to Cruiser! How do I change my oil?” or “New to Cruiser! Should I get an 60/80/100/200?” and I think it’s making a lot of the old-timers kind of bitter.

The only forums where I’ve never experienced this “did you use the search function” asshatery are the old car and hotrod forums. It could be because old cars often have issues unique to individual vehicles, or that most of the forum members are older and have no idea how to use any of the forum tools.

I’ve had some of that on the 80 series forums, but usually someone comes in after and chides that guy for being a dick...then the thread kinda devolves from there...but I digress. The 80 series guys may have heard the question a million times but at least they point you where to look or give you a straight answer.

I used to participate a lot in a boat forum for Supra boats (not related to the cars, obviously). Classic thread progression:

OP: I’m thinking about buying a Supra, what should I look for???

OP: So, I bought this boat, what do you think??? I love it, we plan to take it out this weekend. Hope it runs well!! I plan to add a tower and 1,000,000 watt stereo and ballast for surfing, where should I start?

OP: Took the boat out this weekend, it runs OK but is hard to re-start warm, now it won’t start at all. What do you think it is? Also, the floor is soft in a couple spots. Can I patch those up and be good to go?!?

MINI forums:

OP: So I am looking at buying a R56 Cooper S what should I look out for?

Members: Avoid the 08-10 models because the N14 is a steaming pile of garbage

OP: Thanks, I’m taking a look at one this weekend and will get back to you.

OP two weeks later: So I bought this 09 Cooper S 2 weeks ago and now it has tons of issues. *lists off every common issue with the N14*

Members: *facepalm*

The Mini forums I have been on are rather good about sharing knowledge and not telling you to go search for it. You bring up an issue and you will get a response that it is likely W, which is caused by X, which can be fixed by Y, and you can prevent it from happening again with Z.

I’ve been on and off one BMW forum for years and you get a mix of people who, I swear have some kind of radar for a stupid question and jump all down the throat of the OP, then others who chime in with helpful answers after that.

I’ve also learned that there are a few users who compile useful information any time a common topic is discussed, and link people to the complied information, so I start looking for posts by them, and go from there. There’s also even an E46 wiki that’s really good, but is perpetually in need of updating... still quite a wealth of knowledge.

I just found your thread. I have no specific 120 advice however...

I had Arnotts bags in the Rover. I really liked them, they rode better than the LR bags (which were definitely well passed their best it has to be said). Although I did have an Arnotts bag leak, to which they sent a replacement free of charge, for a P38... which doesn’t fit a Classic. So they sent another, for a P38... Eventually sending the correct replacement. So my mate with the P38 got free rear bags. But they never questioned any of the issues and were good to deal with.

If the Toyota airlines are the same as the Rover, which were just pneumatic industry standard, I found the best way to disconnect was to use a small spanner the same size as the hose to push down on the coupling while then gently pulling the hose out.

Getting hose, fittings, etc, from somewhere that does general pneumatic supplies was way cheaper than anywhere else.

I rebuilt my pump and valve block, it wasn’t that hard but there was plenty of good online information available (because Land Rover), seems not so much for the 120.

09/12/2017 at 18:11, STARS: 0

im not too worried about the pump for now, and if it does go out of the air game for sure. This will just be bags.

Kinja'd!!! "Rufant" (rufant2)
09/12/2017 at 19:02, STARS: 0

Also, based on Rover EAS experience, if your bags are cracked but not leaking, or the system is not leaking elsewhere. The chances of you needing to replace compressor, etc is much reduced. If you have had leaks you can be almost certain other parts will need attention due to being overworked.

Of course the belt a braces approach is to replace/rebuild all the likely items at once. I leant that lesson...

Kinja'd!!! "HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)
09/12/2017 at 19:04, STARS: 0

I checked the bags, they are dry rotten around the fold and when the suspension goes to “lo” or I hit a big bump the air really comes out, otherwise the leak is small enough not to drop to the stops when parked for even a week or 2.

Well, I found these guys pretty helpful back in the day. They are geared up for US vehicles too.

They might be able to answer your questions.

Seems I still have the photos I sent to Arnotts of their leaking bag. No, I don’t know why either...

Soapy water spray if best for testing for leaks if you didn’t know that already.
