I am a Lightroom noob and I can’t figure out what is going on here. I am trying to import a folder of pictures so I can spam you people with hundreds of airplane pictures from the Air Force Museum. But, as you can see, the photos are grayed out. And I don’t know why. Other folders display and import just fine. I did import this collection once before, but for some reason it did not import them in file order so I bailed out. Does that have something to do with it?

Have you checked permissions on that folder? And have you updated recently? If you shoot raw+jpg it might be flagging your jpgs as duplicates so you can try to uncheck the “flag duplicates” option. Also try checking all the import options.

This folder is one of 13 that are in a folder of photos from my vacation. All the other folders have imported without a hitch. And the first time I imported this folder it worked fine, albeit the photos were out of order. So I’m not sure it’s a permissions issue. I’ll check out the options.

I don’t have Lightroom on this computer, but isn’t there a checkbox on there for “ignore duplicates” or something like that to prevent importing twice?

I assume you already removed the photos from your library that you attempted importing the first time?

Uhh, maybe. Like I said, I’m a noob. How can I see an old import? And, if the old import is out of file order, how to I make it in file order?

On your library tab, one of the views on the left side should be “recently imported,” or you could look for the folder on the left where you were attempting to import it the first time.

If you find them, you can remove them, or there should be sort options either on the bottom of the screen or the upper right, depending on which tab you’re looking at.

I’ll have to look at the actual software for clearer instructions when I get home, but I’m pretty sure the order of the photos is adjustable after import, including the option to manually re-order them.

Thanks. I know I can reorder them manually, which I do before export. But I’ve clicked all over the place to find a way to re-order the import with no luck.

Kinja'd!!!

On the “Library” tab, in grid view (not single-photo view, for some reason), there is an option to sort with choices including filename and capture time. I think this is what you are looking for?

Thanks for getting back to me. I managed to figure out that the pictures were already in the catalog, which is why they were grayed out—they were already imported. So I added them to a collection and was on my way. A friend told me about the sorting button, which I had missed entirely. This is actually quite helpful, since I shoot with two cameras and this keeps all the shots in order, rather than sorted by camera. So I think I got it sorted. Thanks again for your help.

No problem. I’m a huge fan of Lightroom, but I find the random shifting of buttons depending on which tab you’re looking at to be unnecessarily confusing.
