Driving without lights. DRL on, but not tail lights, didn’t turn on the switch.
Of course the first 1-800 number I called was for a sex line , from about 30-40 feet a 9 looks like a 6.

I must admit, it happened to me once with the Megane. the DRLs are so bright that I didn’t realise at first, after maybe a minute I noticed the dashboard was not illuminated, Then it dawned on me.

A lot of modern cars have always backlit instruments, too.
IMO, either automatic lights (if an off position is provided, it should be momentary ala GM, not permanently selectable ala Toyota) or motorcycle-style always-on lights (the only control you get is whether low or high beams are on) should be mandated nowadays.
And, really, even though my Prius has auto lights, because it automatically shuts them off, I just leave them full-on all the time.

It happens in our caravan, the dash is actually illuminated all the time, so sometimes you don’t realize it until your driving in the dark. I would give my wife trouble about it, and she would do the same.
This is a ticketable offense, so maybe me calling it in will keep him from a ticket later.
I tried flashing my lights at him from behind, oh well.

There’s an easy solution: mandatory headlights at all times, as they do in Norway. I forgot them once or twice, but you get the reflex quite fast.

I never turn my lights off in my Mazda 3. They have an auto shutoff feature after 15-30 seconds. So I just always leave them on. No DRLs in that car which is odd, but its reliable, cheap on gas, and I like it.

So many cars from different brands have DRL’s so bright that their not so bright owners confuse them with headlights

I have yet to drive something with auto lights - the cars I have experience with all have unlit dashboards with the DRLs (DRLs mandated in Canada).
