Just tracked down these photos that I took a little over a year after 9/11. What is most striking to me is the magnitude of cleanup and recovery still going on 14 months later and how big of an area was cleared away. Obviously I knew that a very bad thing had happened when I heard the news of the attacks, but seeing Ground Zero in person, even mostly cleaned up, was like getting punched in the gut again. The block-long makeshift memorials and debris still remaining at the site after so much time proved a harbinger of how long the road ahead would be. (Please excuse the quality, my brick-sized 2 megapixel camera cost something like $400 back then.)

I’m very glad I spent a good chunk of the money I made working in the summer between high school and college on that camera because I have a ton of photos that I wouldn’t otherwise even if they are low resolution. But it’s crazy that you can get a much smaller one with way better image quality at a thrift store, garage sale or clearance bin for under $20 these days.
