A client of mine just restored a gorgeous ‘69 Mustang fastback. Including purchase of the car, he has $65000 into the thing. Another client has a stock 1983 911 that he inherited from his father. This is next level from me.

Kinja'd!!!

I mention the T Bird, to approving sounds. 429 Thunderjet is a language they speak.

“Guys, I am so excited, I just bought a 1984 Toyota Cressida!”

....

“That’s, uh, great...that’s a square box, right?”

“Well, I got fender mirrors!”

.....

“People like those?”

...

“You like old Japanese cars?”

“Wow! Cool car!”

Sigh.....

Ha - interesting question. Most of my auto enthusiast friends are Ford people. I can enjoy their stuff, but they really aren’t interested in mine. And nobody else in my family is into it. “How can you watch those rally things - it’s just one car at a time? And why aren’t there any Fords?”

But there are a ton of Fords in rally...

Some do, some don’t. I don’t really care. Most of my friends are more of the having fun in cars types, so they appreciate both of mine even though they are completely opposite of each other.

Some yes, some no. As you’ve found, not every car enthusiast has a broad horizons as most on Oppo. Most of my personal enthusiast friends I met through Volvo and euro car scenes. Some of them like my Bronco, others don’t care too much. Most of the generic car people I know don’t give the Volvo a second thought. But many warm up to it once they hear and/or feel the I5 in boost.

Everyone loves the RallyMetro. Probably because it’s so rediculous.

Except my wife. She’s always disappointed when it makes it back home.

My project is a ‘71 Camaro which is a much more mainstream thing than a mid-80s Cressida so it’s easier for more people to wrap their brains around. I think the more of a performance image or luxury cache the car has,the larger the number of people who appreciate it. Personally I don’t get the appeal of the Cressida either but your enthusiasm for it makes it fun and cool.

I regularly take my El Camino to a local cars and coffee. Last weekend my son and I took his favorite car, my 1985 Nissan 720. It is rusty and unrestored and held together with zip ties and hope. It has as much rust and primer as it does paint. But it did pass inspection. I parked it next to a group of beautiful Corvettes and a fully restored 80's Mercedes C280. The reception was - mixed - to say the least. Some people thought it was cool. Others thought it was just some old rusty junk.

Enthusiast friends? What are those? Ha! Most of my friends are more Japanese sports car people, but they appreciate the Cougar. For the most part though, everyone likes helping people work on their cars, regardless of style.

I’ve got four cars to my name, I’d need two more to really appeal to all crowds. While my friends somewhat like one of my cars they rarely like all.

I got my daily, I got my first car that was modified by teenage me, I got my first “collectors” car, and i got my convertible.

Im still out a trucky thing and a tuner car. I will most likely get them, I missed my chance as a poor college student but one day.

I have never owned a Toyota and am pretty indifferent to the brand in general, but I want a Cressida and think ImmoralMinority’s is awesome.

Most people were surprisingly enthusiastic about my Fiero when I had it. That thing got more crap on here than it ever did from anyone I know.

My Civic on the other hand still gets crap even though I don’t have it anymore. I have one friend who kind of understands how awesome the car could’ve been finished, but everyone else just tunes out when I talk about it.

Not a chance. I like things with fender mirrors and old Euros, everyone i know is into muscle or trucks. My friends thought my e24 was “just an old BMW” untill they looked them up on hemmings.

my enthusiast friends get it........ normal people love the ideas, even if they dont quite understand the amount of work involved in making any of it work.....

i start out slow when i am explaining my projects to gauge what kind of a person i am dealing with. like the bug, i start out telling them that it is a long term project car, a 71 vw bug that i am swapping out some fenders so that it looks a little older, and getting those straight. then if they are still awake, and thier eyes havent glazed over, i go on and say all rushed together “v8, manual 4speed, 4link, narrowed 9inch rear.” and see if they flinch...... if they dont flinch over the details “so, what are YOU working on?”.........

Ye’, it’s a real shame there are no Fords in rallying.

Show them these.

These are just the Fords M-Sport make down the road from me.

All levels of rallying catered to.

Thing is it’s not about preserving ‘dream cars’ that cost a fortune, it’s preserving a story of how the car keep to be, how it spawned into something else from something else itself.

but it also tells a story about the owner, their life and interests. It’s living, moving history.

Any car is worth preserving, even the ones we individually find hideous to look at or bland.

That Cresida appealed to you and you went out and got it. It spoke to you in some form as a car you wanted to own and this is more than enough reason to me to keep it on the road till one of you gives out or you lose interest and sell it onto the next custodian.
