Does any car need more than 500BHP? I’m not saying ban them, but it’s like when that actor died in a Porsche Carrera GT - that car even got away from a professional driver. I believe in freedom of choice, but I also think there should be ... a test to own something like this? I dunno ...

I don’t know if the CGT got away so much as it was poorly driven, obviously in excess of laws and common sense.

Seems like a mental competency test might be a good part of it.

Probably not going to happen - I can drive a Fit, Veyron, 42' motorhome, box truck, lifted bro truck, etc with nothing needed.

But if I want a 150 scooter, I need an endorsement.

Poor guys probably didn’t realize how quickly a mile and a half happens at 120+mph.

Or just how long it takes to bring two tons back to a rest from there.

The CGT is probably the last nanny-free supercar from a big brand.

That, plus old tires, plus the plain idiocy involved in driving 100+ mph on local roads. A recipe for disaster.

I hear you - I am permitted to rent manual transmission cars on Turo, why? Because I ticked a box that said I could drive one. And I can - I’ve had many stickshifts over the years. But while I was a pretty good driver, I’m sure my skills have deteriorated since 2001, when I moved here. Should you rent me your Mercedes 350E for a weekend trip to see mom? Sure. Should you rent me your Hellcat for the same trip? Most assuredly not.

I rented a hellcat off turo for the price of a decent hotel. Lady told me to be careful and start out with the 500hp key before using the full power key, but other than that.... Nothing. Crazy to think anyone can hop in something like that so easily

That is nuts ... wonder where I’d draw the line? Rented a 500SL earlier in the year and it had more than enough grunt to get me into the fast lane.

Two senior citizens. Not surprised. Seemed really short sighted. What if the driver/passenger had a medical emergency or something? Just a terrible event all around.

Just because you can afford 700hp, doesn’t mean you have the skill to use it.

Not to mention with both guys being over 70, I can’t imagine their reflexes were scalpel sharp either.

I’m fairly certain someone had a medical emergency at the bottom of the ravine...

Terrible, but entirely preventable.

Via nannies, most of these cars are pretty tame, if you behave somewhat like an adult. A Veyron can burble around town like a Yaris if you want it to. Renting a Hellcat to you might be OK, assuming you are an adult and can remember what the car can do.

That kind of thing also makes me suspect about licensing/testing, unless it was some insanely involved track test that would never happen. Anyone can behave enough to pass a driving test - it’s what they do when not being tested that is of concern.

I’m actually wondering if the driver had a medical emergency during the run. Being 70+ will mean that is a possibility.

A driving coach once told me that the hardest thing to learn is when your reactions are slowing down. This is because it’s ever easier to think into a situation that you are physically unable to drive out of.

So it is also possible that the stopping distance was misjudged, but I’m thinking it is more likely a medical emergency happened to the driver.

Yeah, but I don’t want to be tempted. My very last car before I moved here was a ‘97 SHO. Let’s just say that that, in ‘99, 130MPH was indicated on that thing with a needle on it. Western TN, early morning. I would probably still be incarcerated had I been caught. And I’d never go over 90 again unless I was in Europe and it was legal.

Just work on impulse control :) I’ve had a couple of AMG cars, where I hit some speeds, but I am now over it.

A trip to Germany now and then to observe competent drivers and play on the roads can be like therapy, too.
