I was given a ride on over the weekend. All it needs is a make-the-blades-spin belt and its kinda ok to go.

The paint is ok but pretty boring. My first thought was blue/orange, cuz Gulf everything but i thought i might try something different. I’d like to keep it with an American livery.

This would be ok

I have nearly the exact same mower. I’m sure an enthusiast would be able to spot the numerous differences, but basically from 10' away they are the same color, era, style, everything - even have those hard-sided bagger things, although most of the time I don’t use them.

Mine also plays hard-to-start after sitting for more than about 7 days. Not that there’s a draw on the battery, but it sure acts like there is. I’m curious if your free one will do the same, or if mine is special.

It’s actually fairly easy. There are several tutorials on Youtube (Ed Hubbs and Commando Designs are well done).
I bought an airbrush after seeing this and gave it a try on a scrap hood. It looked convincing, despite bad preparation work.
I want to replicate it on something I would actually use someday

well if it does i’m sure you’ll be hearing about it. do you do anything special when putting it away for the winter?

Get a trickle charger. Stablize your last two tanks of gas. The charger is key though, the charging systems on these mowers suck.

Fuel stabilizer - I actually just put stabilizer in my gas can when I fill it up, for ALL small engines, all the time. And I disconnect the battery and put it in my basement, periodically charging it over the winter. At minimum, fuel stabilizer and disconnect the battery with it at full charge. Oh and oil change either fall or spring. It’s stupidly easy. Fuel filter change in the spring. Also too easy not to do.

I have a new starter to put in, but haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe if I do this before winter, I’ll write it up on Oppo just for fun. Right now I need to look at what I bent on the mower deck last time I used it. Something in the front is bent down from hanging up on a root in reverse. If I lower the deck to mowing height, it drags like a plow blade and rips up a 4" wide swath of sod. Oops. I have no time for this stuff.
