Today I got a couple hundred dollars worth of Amazon Fresh delivered to my door to match the Amazon Fresh Pantry order that arrived yesterday. While this all points to me being a shut-in, it’s all going on my boat, and most of it is stuff I don’t care to eat, but will keep in the environment, which is a thing when you’re stocking a boat. Cardboard and rice love moisture. As I’m stashing this in case of an emergency more than a trip, it’s important. Time + moisture is a disaster. Hopefully I’ll break into it on some overnight trip.

I know a bit about stocking boats. Three years ago I took one from Alameda, CA to Oahu, HI by myself. It took me 40 days in a boat older and slightly longer than whatever car/truck it is you drive. It was a 30' boat. Bahama Islander Mk II. They’re fine, fine boats and exceptionally affordable to purchase — just like most boats — or airplanes — or horses.

So that’s my disaster plan. I’m loading enough water, fuel, food, and propane to make to Hawaii and beyond. Zero intention of leaving the dock, but if I do I can be in Mexico in two weeks. The food be consumed over time because who doesn’t love Cheetos? It’s imperfect as I don’t think the big SF earthquake will happen while I happen to be aboard, but I have live on a fault line and I have a plan. The boat is being stocked and I have an evacuation plan and my immediate peeps know it. Just in case.

What’s your plan?

I’ve been laughing at preppers on TV for years and here we are.

Hoping I’ll be near a big empty field when the next big one strikes the west coast. Less worried about the rebuild phase. Worst comes to worst I’ve got a fishing pole, portable water filters, and know which plants are edible

I think mine’s just going to be just joining the national guard. Can’t be any worse than active duty.

We have plenty of canned food, bit commercial and home canned, and about 30 gallons of water stashed away. Two bug out bags are available as well. Lots of candles and flashlights. Basic stuff

My plan is to remain in Australia. I think it is a good plan.

After the last few weeks living in Michigan isn’t too bad. Plus global warming should take care of the nasty winters soon enough.

Fuck that, I’d take nuclear fallout over drop bears any day of the week. Twice on Sunday.

New Zealand might be preferable then?

I have about a months worth of shelf stable food, week’s worth of stabilized fuel to run the generator that will power my well pump. I need to get a solar system for the well pump for a more permanent solution but the generator works for now.

Most of my neighbors are similarly prepared so we as a neighborhood can hunker down and look out for each other.

Then you’d have to listen to All Blacks fans...

Are they truly worse than nuclear fallout and drop bears? I find rugby easy to ignore these days even when we draw a Test.

I mean, a Prius driver from San Francisco pales in comparison when it comes to smugness so if you can handle that you’re a better man than I.

NZ is just far eastern New South Wales. They can be as smug as they like.

30' boat from Hawaii to Cali? I started getting a little motion sickness on the plane flight, pretty sure I would’ve died on a boat trip.

Fun fact, my grandfather, dad, paternal uncle and cousin, were all in the Navy, but I get majorly sea sick. Thanks mom!

Lovely. I definitely miss having a boat, but Mom sold ours cause her man friend has one lol.

But she looks like a nice capable boat and good escape plan.

I’m immune to motion sickness. However, I had auditory hallucinations on the regular. I was always half asleep from only sleeping a few hours at a time. Laying in my bunk I could hear water going past the hull and my sleepy brain would turn it into Jon Miller narrating a SF Giants game on the radio. Seriously. KNBR. It would keep me awake because I could hear the crowd and the pace of the game but couldn’t ever figure out who they were playing or the score of the game.

I was greatly relieved when I looked it up after reaching Hawaii. Turns out it’s a super common to have auditory hallucinations. Didn’t ever make me wonder if I was truly losing it but it’s a strange thing to have keeping you company in the middle of nowhere with no other human contact whatsoever.
