My friend Cosme and I drove 250 miles to the little town of Paradise, CA, to pick up the Cressida, and I drove it home. First impressions? This is going to be a cool project. I am going to keep it stored at Cosme’s house, and he wants to help me work on it. He knows a lot about cars, and has space and tools.

The cat has a lot of cosmetic issues. It has a few dings and dents, as one would expect, and it definitely needs to be painted. Both bumpers need replacement, as the plastic is split and the foam is showing. Both tail light lenses are cracked, and a couple other light covers need replacement. A reasonable goal would be to be ready for Toyotafest next year.

Driving it was really fun. It drove smoothly, accelerated strongly, and was faster and handled better than I expected. It was fun to drive, and it handled the trip well. It was quick and responsive on the highway, and kept up with modern vehicles easier than the Sunchaser.

The interior is in lovely condition considering the cloth plush upholstery, and the buttons plastics, and controls gloriously transport the driver to the 80s, when this was Toyota’s luxury flagship.

My wife might actually like this.

Cool car!

Flat bottom steering wheels are awesome :p

Those ECT transmission mode buttons are placebos, I tell you! I had a few Toyotas with them, the first three Camry generations, and it felt the same in both modes.

These were really fantastically built cars, and made a boatload of money for Toyota back in the day (or, at least enough to convince them that it was worthwhile to green light Lexus).

I wish we could get something in this price range with a smooth straight six and RWD, and that level of build quality.

I’m also a fan of my 80s tastic radio. I was super bummed to learn that the tape deck didn’t work.

That thing is epic!!! Love the originality of it....also think a 5-speed would be a great choice. I would prefer one as well....at the same time though, that would change some of the originality, so I am torn :(

In my 4Runner at least, it does hold gears longer.

I think I remember getting a ride from a friend one of those when I was I high school in the 90's.

LED VU meters on your car stereo at night FTW.

Keep us posted! Any plans for wheels or other mods? I think I saw some previous posts where you mentioned that.

Whatever you do, keep that stereo!
As for the mirrors: the good thing with old electronics: it’s fairly easy to understand, as it’s mostly Battery + -> Fuse -> Switch -> Motor/Light/Whatever -> Ground

Whatever you do, don’t ever change out those license plates. That design has always struck me as the epitome of cool, and the perfect ‘80s period piece.

I’m back in SoCal right now for a week long visit, and was unpleasantly surprised at how ubiquitous the retro black and yellow plates have become. I like them, don’t get me wrong, but I wonder if they should be limited to cars that would have been equipped with them originally. In addition to that design that should bring back the classic blue and yellow as well as the design that’s currently on this Cressida (maybe they have - I haven’t checked the DMV website...)

I love those old multi-mode transmissions from the 80s/early 90s! Had/have them on my old 1990 Gallant and my current 1991 Cherokee. Most underrated feature of both cars. Your car is like 65% cooler than mine, though!

Not a bad deal there. I definitely dig the interior. And you have to keep the radio.
