Kinja'd!!!

We have decided to go with a Honda Odyssey in blue as a replacement for the Evo. We are going to retain the Evo and work for a salvage title. So, I guess if we are going to minivan we might as well get the Cadillac of minivans. A Honda. I just wish we could get a couple of old school Odysseys. We had two when I was a kid. They were awesome.

I’ll be intrigued to get your impressions on this vehicle. We have an 03, and I really like it, and drove a 17 and hated it. My wife rode in the top drawer model of this van the other day. There were some things she liked, some things she didn’t. For me, the 17 felt overstuffed and over-gadgeted. I like the simplicity and utilitarianism of my 03.

I don’t want to rain on your parade, but they’re just so darned overpriced. At least you get it in blue.

Have they put a CVT in that? I’ve got an 03, and have had no problems with the tranny (knock on wood).

Actually, it appears to be a 9 or 10-speed automatic by ZF! Heck, I’ve driven past the plant in northeast SC where they built the nines but never knew they were going into a Honda!

I know I’m the only guy on Earth saying this, but I like the Pacifica better.

Ours was recalled for a faulty parking pawl, so it’s not like they’re perfect...

Having had both as rental vans, the Pacifica looks the part, but is built of shit. I was saddened by this.

The J-series engine is 23 years old now. Safe to assume that they’ve worked out all the kinks.

It’s going to take me awhile to get my head around the idea of selecting a gear with a button on the dashboard. I still drive with my right hand resting on the shift arm.

I fully endorse this choice. Minivans are the best vehicles at being minivans.

Drove both, well, the older gen of odyssey and then the Pacifica, bought the Pacifica and love it, it has more soul, but also crap resale, so we plan to drive it into the ground. The Odysseys are nice though, and ic you want to unload it in a couple years, you won’t take a bath on it.

Ours has been great for the past 20k miles. Great road tripper, even loaded down with 8 passengers and their luggage. Only thing I’d trade is to swap second row seats with the odyssey, or at least get rid of the stow and go, too many compromises in the seats to make that mechanism work. I’d rather be able to spread them apart than stow them in the floor. Kids seats would fit better.

Yeah, the Odyssey’s transmission problems haven’t affected the resale value. If I was buying a minivan to keep forever, it’d still be a Pacifica.

I guess I should clarify. It worked as advertised, but compared to the Honda it was loud, uncomfortable, had numb steering, and just wasn’t finished out as well. Both were the lowest of the low trims, though. I liked the Sedona I had better than the Pacifica. I really really wanted to like the Pacifica....

Everything my wife priced out, regardless of OEM, was within 3k of each other regardless of being a Minivan or SUV. Even the Kias are at $30k.

We will see. We kind of like gadgets. My wife really likes the option of having the 2nd row be two or three seats depending on our needs. We are going to forgo the rear seat entertainment as we don’t really road trip when we can fly. I’m bummed about lack of towing capability though.

We came to the same conclusion, for one more year of payments, or the equivalent, we could’ve had new. I wished the pacificas would’ve been around a bit longer, so we could’ve picked up a cpo, would’ve saved a bunch. Hondas, not so much. They hold their resale.

Agreed, the cloth trimmed pacificas aren’t all that nice, definitely like the leather trimmed packages. We went with one step down from the limited, and it’s a nice place to spend some miles.

Old odysseys are so much more appealing than the newer ones - pretty much if it has the hiccup-induced side window wiggle (aka the lightning bolt) I’m not interested - despite the failure rate of transmissions. Ergonomics were better, too.

I personally like the Sedona as modern minivans go, since the Sienna hasn’t been substantially updated in too long, and the odyssey is just odd-looking. Though while they’re not directly comparable, the Transit and Transit Connect aren’t bad, either.

...I had a point here, somewhere, but I took a Sunday afternoon nap while writing, and now it’s Sunday evening.

We feel the same way. My sister has the DVD system in her odyssey. Her car is littered with discs. We load up the iPad for a road trip and just listen to music and have actual conversations in daily driving.

Yes, but only small ones. Ford’s been doing a two-car strategy in this segment for a couple years now with the Galaxy and S-Max. The Galaxy being a regular Minivan while the S-Max is 80% as practical but slightly more driver oriented.
