Kinja'd!!!

Does anyone here have experience with the Honda Pilot? It is at the top of my wife’s list as a replacement for our recently totaled Evo (I know). She wants a 6 passenger vehicle so she can haul the kid’s friends. On the plus side, the AWD models are rated for towning 5000 lbs.   That makes dealing with the race car easier.

The towing is no more than 5k in theory. We towed a 17ft boat with our Pilot and it struggled. In the Appalachians near West Virgina it couldn’t get much get up to seventy on the highways.

Yeah, I don’t pretend that it is a super duty truck. Realistically, 3500lbs is about what the race car and trailer weighs.

Do you like it otherwise?

I’ve driven may of the 16-17 models and can say they’re adequate if I had 3 kids and a dog. Driver seat is comfortable and seating position for me (6'3" with 30 inch inseam and long monkey arms) is good but not excellent.

Wrong Honda, you want the odyssey. Good luck getting 6 people in and out of that pilot. Hope you don’t have child seats. Seriously though, just because they have 6 spaces for a human to sit doesn’t always mean you can utilize that space easily. I’d go to the dealership and let your kids climb all over and through whatever model you think you want to purchase because you might be surprised with how it works in reality.

We went from a Q7 to a new Pacifica and the Pacifica regularly sees 8 people in it, and 3 of them are in child seats. We had looked at different SUVs before we had baby 3, and we’re surprised how unfriendly the bigger ones can be to the 3rd row folks. The Q7 was barely passable as a 6-7 seater, but we never planned to use the 3rd row when we bought it. We ended up using it a few times though. Then we looked for one with a more usable 3rd row and didn’t find anything better without going to the escalade ESV sized vehicles, so we held onto the Q7 till baby 3, then we got the minivan. The thing works really well for hauling people and things. Can’t speak for towing, but I have a truck to tow stuff if I need it, so don’t care either. But I’ve seen folks tow with Chrysler and Honda minivans, so it’s possible.

Good luck in your search. Oh yeah, and the best part about the minivan, when my boys run out to the garage to jump in, I don’t have to worry about them dinging my S8 parked next to the van in the garage.

They are truely the best way to do kid transport, hands down. Anyone who says different is lying to themselves because they can’t get over the idea of a minivan.

I went through this nonsense recently with my sister’s car search. She is obsessed with three row crossovers because she’s “not a soccer mom”

Meanwhile she only has one kid (well, 2 if you count her husband), wtf does she need that space for?

Ours was the previous generation a 2011. Very very reliable and a lot of space to put junk everywhere. The leather started to come off the armrest and center console though.

Pilots equipped with the 9 speed auto have had a couple of problems if you look around on forums. I even think the one Road & Track (or Car & Driver, can’t remember) experienced issues with theirs.

(well, 2 if you count her husband).... perfectly stated. I know my wife has 4 kids to deal with, me included in that count. And in her defense, kids, big and small, come with a lot of baggage, so the extra space is nice. I really liked the Q7 size even when we were a family of 3. We had no issue filling it up.

Family experience, the 2nd generation is fairly reliable but had some issues with air conditioning new, and has a bunch of little, non mechanical issues like interior trim not holding up well.

It’s a perfectly good awd minivan without sliding doors. It’s one of the roomier 3-row crossovers out there. If you want a true 3-row vehicle, not just a 3rd row that can fit little kids in a pinch, it’s a solid choice. The current generation now has a torque vectoring awd system that’s basically the same as SH-AWD on its fancier sibling, the Acura MDX.

If you’re looking at new, the VW Atlas and Chevy Traverse are similarly roomy as the Pilot. Most everything else in the 3-row crossover class, the 3rd rows are there, but not all that big. Some of them are half decent, others are pretty worthless.

Seems like all our friend who had one kid and bought Foresters and SantaFes are having their third kids and getting Pilots..

There are two in the family right now, both are earlier 08 models- both are really nice to drive/ride in. My Toyota bones Made me recommend the Highlander or even 4Runner with a third row.. But not my purchase in the end.

We went to some dealerships today and the choice was made to go with an Odyssey. EX in blue is what we want to go with unless the dealership really wants to cut us a huge deal on one of the in stock models. We haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but it will happen.

I will say the interior color options on the Kia Sedona were quite nice, but the Honda has won out.

Good choice, the odyssey is much nicer than the Kia on the road as well, but the Kia is a nice van. Had a rental one for a week and it was decent. I still like the Pacifica best, but the odyssey we had available when we purchased was the last gen one, but it was a great vehicle and it drove nice. I don’t think you guys will be disappointed. That blue is nice, but I’m a fan of their dark metallic gray, or black too, so you really can’t go wrong.

They have a pewter one on the lot that they were pushing. It was a Touring or other trim package. Once again, if they want to give it to us we will talk. As it is, they will have to order in the color we want. What they will have to understand is that I work for an airline and I’m not going to pay $1000 for them to ship a car. I’ll just fly up and get it.

They should be able to trade another dealer for the color. They do that here in metro Detroit pretty easily. The Honda dealer We went to in Troy was excellent. I really wished I’d have liked the odyssey better, as the salesman was great. But actually I got excellent service with buying my Pacifica from Grogan’s in Toledo. Did everything by phone and email. They dropped off a van for us to drive for the weekend at my house in Sterling Heights, and when we decided on a different optioned van, they worked up the paperwork and swapped out the vans the following week after work. It was the best sales experience I’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot, as I’m accustomed to the Cadillac and Audi service. Good luck getting the van you want. Also, you can check out Costco buying, if that’s available to you. Our Honda salesmen was going to match the Costco buyer price anyway, but doesn’t hurt to have that in your back pocket.

We are going to be pretty firm on the colors. If we are dropping $30k on something we are going full Whopper. Getting it our way. We are in no hurry. The only way we budge is at a hefty discount.

I get a discount through work, so that should help, but we are Costco members and it is probably worth looking at.

We are also preapproved for financing at 1.8% through my credit union. They are welcome to beat that.

You’ve got the right idea. Get it how you want it, cause you’ll have it for a while. Only thing I wished I could get on the lower than highest trim package is memory seats. Both the odyssey and the Pacifica hose you by not offering that option until you get to the highest trim packages. HIDs would’ve been nice too, but those can be solved aftermarket at worse case. Good thing my wife and I only move the rear view mirror for our respective drives, now when my MIL drives, the seat gets all screwy. That’s when I miss the memory functions that I have in my S8. Mind love to be coddled, what can I say, I’ve become spoiled.
