scary to think that is 16 years ago.

I wish I had not seen this image this morning. I do not need to be reminded. This is too grim to contemplate.

Scarier to think that an attack of that type seems far more likely today than it did then.

Personally I feel it’s too grim not to contemplate. History is not to be forgotten. Forgetting/repeating mistakes etc.

Good thing there’s not chance of that. It’s still all too vivid.

You know I’d honestly forgotten about this event on this date. Shame that nothing much appears to have changed since then.

I was shit faced in Lightning Ridge on this/that day. It was quite a party. Seeing this on TV afterwards...not so much.

Literally.

Not to make light of the situation, but there was an episode of Family Guy that was spot on on this... where they managed to prevent 9/11 and as a result the media reporting on it had no idea how to pronounce Al-Qaeda.

The whole “this doesn’t concern me until it does” mentality.

Never forget history. No matter how much you want to. It’s also more than a shame, it’s terrifying to think that the odds of this happening today are probably higher than they were in 2001.

You probably had the better way of spending that day though, in all honesty.

The truth is, mate, I don’t regard it as my history. It’s just the past to me. I’m not American and I never interpreted it as an attack on me, my country men or my country. Fellow Australian’s died in the attack but in my view they found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Shit does happen. It happens all the time. With no more or less regularity or frequency now than then. But our capacity to be bombarded with it due to our ability to communicate has increased out of sight!!

Still remember that day vividly, was sitting in my college cafeteria watching the news when the second plane hit. I remember my friends freaking out because their parents were in the Financial district. Then trying to get home when they closed the schools and sent us home, my parents lived next to a joint air national guard and naval air station and I don’t think there wasn’t a moment when there wasn’t a warplane taking off. Everything was in the air, including the Warthogs and all with combat load outs (watched as both F18's and Warthogs flew over the house with missiles on their wings).

Was pretty hectic day to say the least.

I was in college, in class. I remember going to the student union after class, and the big TV was on - most of the time it was just background noise, but the place was packed, and no one was speaking. Just a few people ducking out trying to reach out with their cell phones (not everyone had one back then) as a lot of kids had parents working in those buildings.

My sister was on a tour of the White House that morning, and was promptly evacuated. I couldn’t reach her for hours because “all circuits are busy” was the only outcome of any outgoing call with a cell phone in that time.

More than anything, I regret the fear that gripped this country in the wake of this event, and the countless lives that have been lost since, in pursuit of “freedom” that’s still going on. Not that I feel we should have sat still and done nothing, but the path we went down in the years that followed... it veered off at some point, and I still don’t feel we’re ahead of where we started.

I’m not an American either. Granted I’m closer than Australia.

Regardless, it’s less the extent of the event (bad as it was) and more the significance. It’s a deliberate attack on mainland USA. The last (and only) time anyone got away with that was 203 years ago. I don’t know or care what your political views on the USA are, but the facts are the facts—you don’t mess with American shit (feel free to insert “they do all the messing themselves” comment if you feel the need, but it’s the truth). Even the fact that the Cold War never became red-hot was based on the fact that you don’t mess with a superpower, even if you are one yourself. 9/11 was a literal record scratch to global politics.

Picture a party. Everyone is more or less getting along, though some of those in attendance are packing heat and watching others very carefully. Now in the corner of the room there’s one person by themselves, punching people at random as they walk by. The other guests know they’re there, and after either being punched or watching someone get punched would just ignore and avoid the odd dude in the corner. After a while, they get up, go to one of the most important people in the room and delivers a viscous kick in the nuts. The entire room falls silent, shocked. The victim gets to their feet. The attacker is nowhere to be seen, and nobody had recognized them. The victim proceeds to attack the person they suspect of plotting the incident. Part of the room gives support. Part of the room is even more shocked. Part of the room sees an opportunity to go nuts themselves under the cover of mayhem.

Terrorism is a Hydra. 9/11 was the day the it left the entrance of the underworld and came into the open, and consequently the day the first head got placed on the executioners block. Sadly thus far there has been little more than blind chopping, with no results on sealing the wounds to prevent further heads from growing.

TL;DR 9/11 brought terrorism front and center to worldwide consciousness. Sad as it may sound, shit matters more when it happens to the USA. Because if there’s no holds barred against the USA, there’s no holds barred anywhere.

Grade 1 for me. I didn’t know until I got home. My mom handed me a news clipping... that page is burned into my mind. I didn’t really grasp it completely at the time, but even so that day left a permanent mark.

Grade 1. No news at the school. Got home and was handed a news clipping by my mom. I don’t remember reading it, just looking at the pictures and asking questions. That page is a permanently seared into my mind.

Also re the response... I used the metaphor in another reply, but basically cutting off a head on a Hydra without sealing the wound.

I was in highschool, and all I really knew was that something happened because another teacher came into the class, spoke with my latin teacher and afterwards she got really quiet and asked us to just work on our homework rather than continuing her lecture. It wasn’t till I got to my drafting class, where we had a TV that I found out what had happened, and was completely shell shocked. Nothing more was accomplished that day, or honestly for a few days after, especially since we had a few family friends that I knew worked in the WTC, and in the pre-social media environment it took us forever to find out if they were ok or not (by pure happenstance, only 1 of them was in the office that day, and he thankfully made it out ok).

I really didn’t grasp the whole situation (I was juuuust not-quite-7) at the time, but I knew shit had gone down. I could figure that much. From the point I found out that day is permanently burned.

I contemplated it plenty when it happened. The only time in my life I’ve ever awaken screaming. I’m not in denial, I just don’t want to steep in it.
