Not really, just a shitload of electronic lag. Felt kind of like driving a Corolla.

I just got the compact black 18v Makitas. Kept all the 18v batteries and charger, got the naked tools online. They are great, brushless 18v but alost as small as the old 12v.

Makita makes some damn nice tools.

This one ain’t anything special, but still more than adequate.

I still have two other generations of Makita and they work despite being beat to shit. I am trying to keep my tool box smaller because I work on shows and have to move around a lot.

Seriously, look at the trigger response on the Milwaukee. Like driving a Corolla.

Whenever we’ve had a job around the house that was bigger than I felt like handling, the pros that showed up almost universally had Makita tools.

Nope, you picked the wrong one. I like the Makita more. Which is annoying because I really like the design of the Malwaukee.

But look at that lag on the trigger pull... it’s horrendous. Totally awful.

I have the same thoughts on this particular Makita (though that being said it’s the odd one out among Makita’s that I’ve used), and I do quite like the design and overall feel of the Milwaukee.

But that horrendous electronic lag when you pull the trigger... I’m sorry but I just. can’t. even.

I want to like it but I can’t.

The rachet impact is sooooo handy. We have a ford 2.3 in our lemons car and I used to dread pulling the starter or the hose clamp to the heater hose behind the carb because both would allow about 2 ratchet clicks per rotation. Now pulling those clamps and bolts are just fun.

I’ll never buy another Milwaukee tool. every single one of their tools myself or my dad has bought, has died almost a year and a day from purchase. I have a little Makita that kicks ass.

My dad had a good Milwaukee... still does, actually. Pretty tired now, but hey it’s been around the block many times. Got to be at least 30 years old at this point. Was still the best drill we had up until the last few years.

Like this guy here. But I’m pretty sure his is a hair older.

Naturally, he’s got the Makita competitor as well:

I’ve had really good luck with my Milwaukees. I’m not brand loyal in any way though. I own tools from all the major tool companies. I will say that the most disappointing tool I’ve purchased in the last five years, is my brushless 18V Makita 1/2" drill. It is absolutely gutless.

I’ll have to see if mine does that. I’ve never noticed it. I miss my 18V NiCAD DeWalt. That thing was heavy as hell, but had serious balls. Selling that to buy the brushless Makita was a huge mistake. It can’t do half the work that the old DeWalt could power right through.

I really like my DeWalt, but don’t really have much to compare it too. Better balance and power than my father’s old Makita, but that’s probably not saying much.

Tell me that’s an electric ratchet...

I’ve never seen such a thing and had no idea they existed!

Kinja'd!!! "shop-teacher" (shop-teacher)
09/10/2017 at 05:42, STARS: 1

It’s not an impact gun, so it doesn’t have a ton of torque. It will break stuff loose that isn’t super tight. Stuff that is really tight I just crack loose by hand with a wrench, and then let this little guy do the rest. It’s a huge time saver. No, it doesn’t lock when the trigger isn’t pulled. If you’ve ever used an air ratchet, it works the same way, but no air hose to mess around with.

Kind of. It is claimed for 30 ft pounds which it appears to do on a freshly charged battery. But after maybe 20 minutes use, you end up with maybe 60% battery but you have to break the bolt free yourself.

Dumb question: is this a result of new brushless motors? I was drill shopping recently and have read mixed reviews of brushless... which I don’t fully understand because I haven’t bothered to dig deeper.

Kinja'd!!! "Smallbear wants a modern Syclone, local Maple Leafs spammer" (smallbear94)
09/11/2017 at 10:30, STARS: 1

I don’t know if the lag is a result of being brushless... I doubt it though since even the brushed ones are electronically controlled. I don’t even know if the Milwaukee IS brushless.

If you’re talking about the lack of balls low down, I think that’s a result of being brushless. It’s essentially an AC induction motor and iirc those have worse low-end torque than a brushed motor.

But I’m far from an expert, I just know what I like.

That’s so awesome - I’ll really need to look into adding one to my arsenal. Are you supposed to use impact sockets on it? Is it an impact ratchet? (is that a thing?)

Kinja'd!!! "RacinBob" (racinbob)
09/11/2017 at 19:15, STARS: 1

Regular 3/8 sockets. I would deemphasize the “impact” capability as once the battery if off peak, it kind of gives up the restrike impact thing.

So either keep fresh batteries or accept that you can still hand torque or break loose things with it after the battery is 25% down.
