Found this Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V while browsing through listings, and was wondering just how good it is.

Looks to be in somewhat decent condition. 5-speed. $1,950 with 170k miles.

An Se-r of that generation is a blast. Good power, good suspension components. It’s a very enjoyable driver-focused car. I’d take this over a comparable civic Si any day. That’s a good price too assuming nothing major is wrong with it. I don’t know what the spec V adds on top, but I’m sure it’s even better
(Edit) Plus a six speed manual and LSD in an early 2000's Nissan. Pretty crazy for the time! This is from a road & track test of all the hottest compact cars at the time

That gen Sentra is not terrible, the Spec V is something else though, Altima engine (the 2.5L), 6 speed manual, LSD, better suspension and interior. I’d say it’s >$1951 worth of fun if it looks like it would last a year. Not a lot of boy racers know about them, so it’s possible it might be serviceable mechanically and not full of holes. But at that price point I wouldn’t bet on years of faithful service.

They’re okay, just don’t get the Nismo catback, my neighbor had one and it sounds worse than a Ebay fart can on a single cam Honda.

From Wheels.ca - I remember reading about similar problems years ago, but couldn’t find the link to that exact article, whatever it is.
This one tells the same story I’d read about though - highlighting mine for your reference:
“Nissan 2.5 L Four Cylinder
The pre-catalytic converter built into the exhaust manifold of Nissan’s 2.5 L four cylinder engine can reportedly disintegrate as it ages. The ceramic material gets sucked back into the motor, causing increased oil and coolant consumption and, eventually, engine self-annihilation.
It’s a big problem among 2002 and 2003 2.5 L four-cylinder Altimas, as well as Sentras with the same motor. Then came word Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs equipped with the same engine built between January and May 2006 may experience unusually high oil consumption. This can lead to premature engine failure and possibly a fire.
Owners of any 2.5 L Nissan engine are advised to check their engine oil level frequently. This motor also reportedly loves to ingest the screws from the butterfly valves in the intake runners, another hazard that can score the cylinder walls.”

I bought one slightly used in 2003. It was fun to drive, but I always had problems with it. The final straw was that somehow the engine was bending one of the spark plug gaps closed and thus misfiring. I had it to the dealer 3 times over it. They couldn’t figure it out so I traded it for a WRX.
If you’re not gripping the steering wheel tight, you could end up in the opposing lane when you floor it!

That is not a Spec V. It is just an SE-R. The spec v has a different interior, rims, transmission, and engine programming. I own a 2003 Sentra se-r spec v.
