Kinja'd!!!

In order to maintain compatibility with the rest of their narrowbody fleet, I would assume, AA has a strange seat layout on the MD-80 (maybe other carriers do as well - I was rampside and didn’t deal with the cabin). When I got to my row I logically assumed that seat ‘E’ was the window seat and so I sat there. Thankfully the person assigned there didn’t show, or whatever, and so I got at least one of the window/aisle seats I had chosen before they canceled my original trip and rebooked me. It wasn’t the trip into Orange County, as originally planned, but I’ll take what I can get.

Because of this change, I did get to fly on one of AA’s few remaining Mad Dogs. I’m going to miss this old beast. I was never a big fan in the past, but the more I fly commercially the more I appreciate it. Note to Boeing, Airbus and the others: 6 abreast seating is annoying and we’re not the same sizes we were back in the ‘50s. Next go-around they need to think about the width of the airframe and seats. I know that there was some talk in the past about Boeing’s next aircraft, a 737/757 replacement, going to a 767-like 2-3-2 seating arrangement, and I say GO FOR IT.

For your viewing pleasure, here are a few snaps from that too short STL-ORD leg of my trip:

Nice! Morning flights are best flights.

And I fly AA all the time, but it’s been years since I’ve been on a Mad Dog. Love them when you’re sitting up front - whisper quiet.

In a way that reminds of the first review of the VW Vanagon back in the late ‘70s/early’80s - “the engine is far from quiet but it is also far from the driver “. I’ve never had a seat in the front of a mad dog, but from what I understand you can hear the sound of the air rushing over the fuselage.

That’s an accurate description of the Mad Dog (and 727).

I fly often enough that I’m almost always in the front of coach, and it’s pretty quiet on the MD-80 there. The rushing of air is almost all of the noise you hear.

The two only times I’ve flown on an MD-80, once was right in front of the engine and the other time it was right next to the engine and during a storm and I’m scared of sudden drops and turbulence and that was practically all the take off was.

I do not have fond memories of the MD-80 but I will miss seeing a different shape of plane at airports.
