Kinja allows anyone who is an author on a forum to share posts and comments to that forum. In days past this was a two way street where authors were trusted to know what to share AND unshare, with the latest revision to Kinja it seems thats changed. With that in mind the moderators of this fine forum have come up with a set of rules and guidelines for sharing.
First to sum up how kinja sharing [currently] works:
Anyone can choose to share any post or comment to a blog they are an author on.
Only admins (moderators and owners) of that blog can unshare comments and posts.
Sharing, if you aren’t already aware, is a direct link only to the content and there is no way to comment directly to the person who shared it.
With these in mind we have some new rules and guidelines for how to share content.
To clarify terms:
Gawker properties - paid authors, the stuff you see in the top bar.
Personal kinja properties - Still part of gawker and the kinjaverse, but are run by users. Generally speaking personal properties on kinja are going to all be roughly the same size an scale which is the important distinction worth making between the two. Also, please respect other communities guidelines for sharing content to AND from them.
1. Do NOT share posts from gawker properties directly without context. We love some of the cool stories that happen around the kinjaverse and there are some really interesting and important thought pieces that are absolutely worthy of discussion here in Oppo. WE DO NOT want to limit Oppo to the benefits of these discussions. However, knowing that you cannot comment directly to the author who shared the post which means no conversation is permitted to happen in Oppo. Without a way to comment in oppo, its essentially just spam. Direct shares from gakwer properties will be unshared regardless of its merit.
Instead, please share interesting posts from gawker properties as editorials. Write a new post for Oppo, and link to the story in the body of the post along with some of your thoughts. Give us your take on it, tell us why you think its important, tell us why you think its stupid if you want (bearing in mind the shit posting rule)....just tell us something about it other than it exists and give us the opportunity to comment on it here where you shared it. A person who would otherwise click through a blind share will not be dissuaded from clicking through on your editorialized post. As with the first point, this isn’t a means to limit the kinds of things we talk about here, it simply allows them to actually BE talked about here.
2. Sharing can and does occur between personal properties including weekly crossthreads, personal blog posts and other smaller niche properties like LiveAndLetDieCast and Overland&Expedition to name a few. Please share thoughtfully and consider the rules of the community you are sharing from and to. Keep sharing volumes reasonable, and if you are sharing your own content or hosting a cross post please work to ensure that people you hope to have commenting on your post are welcomed and ungrayed as appropriate.
3. With regards post re-shares and comments shares, we ask that you stick to the guidelines and rules already laid out by Gamecat laid out below.
Please do not share any
post
more than once after its original publication, with the following exceptions:
If you shared your post, and due to Kinja issues, it was not seen as it was meant to be presented, in these cases, preface your reshare with an explanation. We understand that kinja works in mysterious ways (and Nibbles is still with us, somewhere).
If there is a theme day and after a time less than four hours your post is more than 6 pages back.
For posts which are recurring and benefit the community as a whole (such as posts from moderators discussing the community, like this one) or benefiting a subgroup of the community in organizing an event (meetups, for instance) then slightly more periodic resharing may be appropriate. However when in doubt about this, please ask before sharing.
If more than one week has passed from the date of the original share, and the topic is still highly relevant and would, in your eyes, benefit the community, you may re-share a topic once again.
When sharing a comment from a post (your own or someone else’s), please follow this guide: Does the comment as it will appear on Oppo (e.g. the first paragraph) stand alone, on its own, as a post, which will lead people to want to read more or is self-evident as to why it was shared without any additional context ? If it doesn’t meet this, we tend to look negatively at the share, because essentially, it is just noise.
Finally, if you do see a violation of these rules and guidelines:
4. Don’t post complaining about it. It can take some time before an unshare is complete, give it some time. In addition when it is removed your post will be without context and will wind up looking a little “ up old man yells at clouds ”
If it isn’t unshared in a reasonable time, find one of the moderators and bring it to our attention. The easiest way would be to find one of our posts and bring it up there. We can be found at:

5. DON’T shit stir, in either direction. This is a violation of the rules and will get you in trouble. i.e. don’t go to a linked post and complain about how this shouldn’t be shared...they probably didn’t share it...or say oppo sent ya. Likewise don’t bring fights back to Oppo in your editorialization, either with authors or commenters.

This post all makes sense, and thank you for it.
There is one thing that I would bring up. Not every discussion about the problems we see with other Kinja blogs is simple shit stirring. Sometimes a discussion about echo chambers or racism or other issues that may reflect negatively on one of the other blogs is a legitimate conversation, and not just a bitch-fest. As such, I would like to think we will use common sense here when deciding whether to condemn or allow such posts.

The worst problems we have are with political posts (surprise, surprise) like the post earlier this week about Texas’s immigration bill. That post was written in good ole gawkerish shit-stirring style, guaranteed to polarized and inflame. It could have been criticized for violating the code, but because it went with the general political sentiment of the forum, it wasn’t. Also, in general, the mods don’t like to insert themselves anyway, and that restraint is a good thing. I have very seldom seen them ban something.

I think I missed the post you’re referring to (and probably want to keep it that way) but the nature of politics these days sometimes makes it hard to bring it up at all in a way that *someone* won’t interpret it as shit-stirring. :(
The mods here don’t interfere much - but when they’re needed, they do jump in quickly. Without their work, Oppo would degrade pretty quickly, I’m sure.

I wasn’t even here for the share so I have no idea what it was about, but I would’ve liked to know . But now I don’t have the option because a mod considers it shit stirring. This isn’t about censorship, unless you glossed over the parts where I say that interesting and important content OUGHT to be shared. This is about sharing in a way that allows people to use that information. Its the difference between paying your gas bill through the proper channel and walking into the gas companies main office, dropping off a box of cash with the secretary and leaving. Oppo is not a dumping ground, if you think something is worth sharing here its worth discussing here. Just plopping down content without context is just noise.

Personal stuff slips into the guidelines bit because the place its shared from is probably not going to be much different than discussing it on oppo. What I mean is that if I share something from O&E to oppo, its not like the actual discussion is going to be much different than if I posted straight to oppo. Mostly the same people and the same general numbers of contributors. I guess a gray area would be sharing something from groupthink or the like without context. I hold out hope that people here don’t need to be commanded in all things and to make the judgement call based on the spirit of what this rule is trying to accomplish - Keep the clutter off oppo while allowing great conversations to happen.

Theme days shouldnt really be barred. For reference go back to July 4, which many people posted something about the day, which to euro oppos meant nothing and I don’t remember one complaint on that from them,memes were even posted about how July 4th overshadowed Canada day and such. This was a good theme day that was really not affecting anyone negatively, everyone got several comments. The posts had depth and I quite enjoyed reading everyone’s fourth. So while older theme days got tiring (like the “my cars ranked” that just became shitposts about top ten *blank*) we should really talk about maybe making clear rules but we really shouldn’t be against theme days that every theme post is well written or actually interesting

Its quite simple really. Once every 408 days a portal opens up in the benzine realm. When this happens 12 golden marmots with rocket packs appear to do battle with a challenger selected for their bravery and sincerity. For 4 long nights challenges are issued and battles are fought. The point is that if you want to share something from another Gizmodo site, creating an Oppo post here with a link to it (and hopefully some commentary about why you’re posting it) lets us talk about it here . If you just share something directly from e.g. Splinter and any of us want to comment on it, it takes us to the Splinter page and their own comment section. and there are plenty of us who are still in the grays on Gizmodo sites, and if you’re still in the grays at this point you’re probably going to be there forever.

Yep, I think the key concern is that we should be able to discuss them here. Sharing from a main page kinja blog means that can’t happen, either people will be in the gray, or lost in the flood of comments, or in the case of The Onion, comments will be disabled.
Though note:
Write a new post for Oppo, and link to the story in the body of the post along with some of your thoughts. Give us your take on it, tell us why you think its important, tell us why you think its stupid if you want (bearing in mind the shit posting rule)....just tell us something about it other than it exists and give us the opportunity to comment on it here where you shared it.

I read and re-read the sharing thing and it is all a bit confusing at least to me, I think primarily because of the use of the term author. From the context I see two authors, the author of the original post and the author of the repost, or “share” as it is called, is that the same as a link, anyway, would be much easier to follow if the references were to original author and reposter. I think the general gist is if you share a link to a story (Gawker or from anywhere?) You should only do it if you also include your own editorial comment, take or question about it. I can’t imagine linking a story or post without saying something about it, but I suppose it could happen. The rest of the nuance is a little fuzzy.
I will add on a positive note that the main rule, be excellent to each other, is a great rule, simple, easy to understand, and for the most part pretty effective here.

Sorry I am lost in the terminology here, by direct share do you mean a share that you don't add content to, I thought you could share things if you commented on them, does direct mean "not commented on". I am really not trying to be obtuse, but if you are trying to lay down or explain rules you need to be more precise with your terminology.

the gist of it is that we want you to lin k to the content you want us to see along with your editorial take in the body of a new post if it’s from a paid gawker site (jezebel, jalopnik, etc) instead of using the “share to blog” function.

Thanks, that is what I do anyway, nothing to do with the rules, but my technical skills stopped developing somewhere around internet and email, and never really evolved to social media, so I don’t try to “ share” things, I always screw it up, I just copy and paste links.
