My wife got this email from Honda this morning.

Kinja'd!!!

I know this is just a ploy to get me to buy a new car, and there very likely is a need for used cars, but this just strikes me as terribly crass.

These are never anything but a way to get you into the showroom to spend more money.

I realize that, but it sounds to me like they’re using the storm as an excuse. They may well have a lot of people looking for used cars, but this seems a bit crass.

Oh it’s legit. It’s a legit way to get you into the show room. and they will legit give you money on a trade in on the CRV in exchange for you buying a new one from them. it’s absolutely a legit way to get you to spend more money.

Just a trick to get you into a showroom and trap you into payments for the next years. Using hurricane victims is an additional shitty move.

Pretending to be a Harvey victim, I just lost my puppy, house and belongings. My cars were all flooded and I am living in a pitch tent at a red cross shelter. This is exactly what I am thinking - Man. I wish I had a 2013 Honda Civic 2DR CPE L. No other car will do to soothe my soul right now.

GTFO. That’s the kind of thinking that should get this dealership on a shit list.

If the dealership was truly concerned and wanted to help, take your shitty used cars off your lot and bring them all down there and donate. Tax write off, good deed for the day and your lot is a bit more empty to take in better inventory.

What I find amusing about these targeted ads from the dealership is they never even bother to look at registration details. Up until just recently I was still getting those flyers for a car I got rid of 4 years prior. Although in their defense I did only have the vehicle for 8 months.

I’d say it’s in very poor taste to throw in the comment about Harvey as a reason for contacting you. Picture this: a group of dealership employees sat in a room together and said, “Hmm, we’ve got a lot of incoming demand for used cars after Harvey right now.” And one of them said, “We could send out one of those emails and mention that!” And then others in the room saw no problem with leveraging hurricane devastation for sales - not just by letting it happen, but by actively, openly leveraging it.

A few years ago we had a building burn down at the marina where I was working. Yeah, eventually it put some people in the market for new boats. But NEVER did we consider emailing our customers and using the fire as a sales technique.

I still get recall notices for the Malibu I owned for less than a year, that I got rid of three years ago.

Also Serius/XM desperately wants me to activate its satellite radio. Which I never paid for, only used the 3-month trial, and didn’t really care for.

Wow! I get these all the time for my truck, apparently a lot of people want a slightly rusty crew cab truck, but using the hurricane to try and market themselves is really uncool. I bet that dealership is the sort that would make your skin crawl.

I just got a voicemail from my Subaru dealer offering free inspections to anyone who thinks their car might have been affected by Harvey flooding. Sounded like a ploy to get people into the showroom. I’ve been pretty happy with them as far as dealers go but this really rubbed me the wrong way.

I love my Honda service rep, and we had a great salesman who sold us the Civic. This probably came out of some office somewhere, maybe even corporate, and was likely written by somebody who hasn’t spoken face to face with a customer in years.

I have used that dealership for years, and I have a fantastic service rep. Our salesman was very good too. I think it’s entirely possible that this guy doesn’t even work at this specific dealership, or certainly doesn’t work directly with customers. I think it’s definitely a blot on this dealership.

I drive a Civic, but I bet they’d love to get me into something bigger—and more expensive. It’s like the waitress at IHOP who comes to your table to take your order and brings a tray with a glass of orange juice on it. Hey, I think to myself, I wasn’t going to have orange juice, but now that I see it, I’ll go ahead and order some.

I haven’t found that to be the case. I’ve been to dozens of them over the years. Probably half of them make my skin crawl, a quarter of them are fine, and the other quarter are actually pretty good to work with.

But man, the bad ones are BAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!

Fair enough, I was more thinking on average.

I’ve been to some “Hi! Would you like a latte or bottled water?” and some “Hi! Would you like some meth? No? FUCK YOU, YOU FUCK!”

On balance, the dealership experience tips to the negative.

I’ll give you that!

I remember a used car dealership I used to drive past, where if you made the mistake of driving through their lot, salesmen would literally run along side your vehicle to try and get you to stop and talk to them. Happened to me twice, with two different salesmen.

Not quite a shitty, but my mother showed me a letter she got from a Hyundai dealership (not the one she’s bought from, either) telling her they’ve got people looking for a 2011 Santa Fe like hers, and they’d be more than happy to get her into a new one for a lower payment than what she’s got now. Being it’s been paid off for over a year now, I’m trying to figure out how that works. Do they pay her to take a new one? :-D

My dad briefly owned a 1995 Impreza L back in 2009 or 2010. He bought it from the original owners who purchased it new from Patrick Subaru in late 1994. My dad sold it to a rally friend in 2010 or 2011 who beat the snot out of it and I am pretty sure it was parted out in 2014 or 2015. In 2015 we got a postcard from Patrick Subaru (the car never went there during our ownership because my dad has had bad experiences with them in the past) offering us a free car wash to celebrate the 20th birthday of that Impreza.

Then this summer when my dad bought his BRZ Series.Yellow (his 8th Subaru and 3rd from the this dealership) Subaru started sending him all the “Welcome to the Subaru Family!” congratulating him on buying his first Subaru.

They aren’t the brightest bunch. They replaced the clutch in my dad’s old Legacy 2.5GT and failed to get the intercooler hooked back up properly. When my dad was getting them to fix the intercooler they kept claiming they did all the work from underneath and didn’t touch the intercooler. Subaru’s have a trans mount between the firewall and the top of the bellhousing, under the intercooler.

Crass, but there will be a huge demand in your state for new cars. I know of someone who got an insane deal on a MDX in 2008/9 during the finacial mess beacause they couldn’t move new cars, and had to meet their quota .
