Why are rear seats like this?

I’ve driven a couple different cars, and I’m not sure if this is an industry standard or not, but the rear seats tend to be arranged in a 1 + 2 format; why is that? The spot behind the driver’s seat can always bend down on its own [pictured], it’s never one unit with the middle spot. But the middle seat and the passenger side rear seat is always one unit. I’m curious as to ‘why’.

I wonder because with two car-seats (for my two kids), I tend to put them behind the drivers seat and in the middle. But this prevents me from bending the rear seat down for extra storage, since the drivers side is blocked. I always thought it would be more natural to have a 2 + 1 setup, to have the driver and middle seat be one unit, and the passenger side on its own.

Any thoughts oppo?

why not shift the child seat from behind the driver to the passenger side?

also the child seat in the centre may block the 33% section from folding too

Arbitrary design decision.

The 60/40 split is so you can still carry two passengers when you have something long to haul. If they split it 50/50, the middle seat would not be available.

Why they have the smaller split behind the driver? I don’t know. Is that common?

Children behind passenger seat makes more sence as for corrective action, finger pointing, breaking up fights.

Behind passenger seat - you can fit something semi long and wide. If you fold up the front seat as well, you can fit something little wider than the seat width.

Behind the driver, you can place something long and narrow - skis for instance diagonally and not affect the driver.

What I am wondering though, is if cars with right hand drive has the same seat split in rear as left hand drive cars or if it’s reversed to fit my logic.

The front passenger desires comfort. The driver needs it. So the passenger can buck up and move forward to make room without impeding the ability to use the pedals in a comfortable manner.

I had a good reason as to why I put the car seat behind the driver, but I do it out of habit now and I forgot why, lol. And if you move the middle car seat over a bit, you can put the one seat down. Back in our pt cruiser, and when we had only one kid, I put her in the middle and put the 33% part down to fit my bass guitar in the car.

It is for the Corolla, pt cruiser, and Grand Prix in my driveway. Also the 2000 Malibu I used to drive too. I think there might be a reason, I’m just not sure what it is though.

I’m sure it would add complexity, but why can’t it be modular? Make the middle able to fold with either side.

That makes sense.

in that case just shift the child seat, problem sorted.

What’s curious though, is that in the last gen Grand Prix, the passenger seat is able to fold down completely. Tha back of it is hard plastic. It’s meant to be put down to put long items into the car.

Because that’s too simple of a solution. It has to be tradition! Not new-fangled ideas, lol.

Following up McMike, it still lets you haul two passengers in the back seat, and cargo doesn’t care if it gets leg room so the driver can still put their seat back far enough to have a safe driving position.

My ‘12 Golf 2 door was kind of like that. 60/40 but you could drop a pretty wide opening in the center armrest to the rear hatch area.

In my M3, the narrower fold-down section is behind the passenger.

I went to Nissan japan and found the “Sylphy” which looks to be the versa’s name over there. Doesn’t look to be any different.

BUT I kept looking because this is a great way to avoid working and I found the Teana (Altima? Maxima? idk my nissans like that) back seat...which looks to be supportive of what you’re saying.

So you only have to go to one side of the car? That’s why I put my kid behind the driver’s seat, at least until kid #2 came.

safer to have children exit car on passenger side if you park on a street though.

My E90's rear seats don’t even fold flat. You had to order the winter package to get fold down rear seats. Terrible decision by BMW.

My X1 lets me fold the center seat down by itself. It’s glorious. I can load long things in it without removing the car seats.

If you park on a street I guess, but driveways and parking lots are easier.

Amen to the loathing part! My sons old car seat base was in the middle, and I used the tie down that comes with it; the base was physically stuck and I couldn’t loosen the straps at all. I had to do a seat belt cutter on the car seat straps just to get it out.
