Class D is a weight classification, it’s not just for duallies. My dad had an ‘04 Silverado 2500 HD that had class D plates.

A lot of guys who are supposed to run class D plates don’t actually do it. They’re a pain, because you have to get a safety inspection twice a year. When my dad replaced that truck, he happily went back into a 1/2 ton and was thrilled to not have to mess around with those inspections twice a year. Cops don’t really enforce it I guess, if it has single rear wheels then they don’t think about the weight. The only reason my dad bought that HD truck and ran class D plates was the state had an incentive going at the time for business who bought new heavy duty trucks, where they waved the sales tax.
I knew a guy who got away with running regular class B truck plates on his dually for years. He got pulled over for it once, but the guy is a world class BSer and convinced the cop that his dually was a version with, “The light weight ceramic frame.”
