Kinja'd!!!

These plastic exhaust surround “heat shields”. My 2006 Mazdaspeed 6 has them, and they seem to be popping up on cars left and right today. When and where did they start? Was the MS6 an early trend-setter?

Not related, but that top picture should have been taken with the license plate on the front. And also in Nova Scotia.

I honestly think it was the MS6. I don’t recall seeing it before 2006, but I’ve sure seen a lot SINCE then.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to think of examples prior to 2006 and couldn’t come up with anything.

It’s a little sad to see the tiny stock exhaust (similar size to the Miata’s exhaust tip in the same photo) in the middle of the big fake tip on the MS6.

I don’t understand it either. Why not just give the car a real tip?

The 2007 Lexus LS was another early adopter of this trend.

The gen1 Mazda3 isn’t quite the same. There is a plastic bit there, but it looks like the exhaust runs under it, not through it. Good call on the RX-8, though.

I suspect it started with aftermarket fart cannons.

folks like a big pipe, for looks mostly. I think as cars get bigger, the pipes need to get a little larger so things look proportional

Right? Like how depressing must the car be if they couldn’t even clamp a nice it on the end of the exhaust?

That just looks like a set of fake exhaust tips, which is not quite the same as what I’m referring to: unabashed, unpainted grey/black plastic with (fake or real) exhaust running through it.

The application on the Dart is to make it’s butt look smaller. Imagine how big the back would seem if the body colors went all the way to the bottom.

Same with these

The LS has some unpainted gray plastic hiding under the fake tips. The design is just more well integrated.

I’m a former MS6 owner and yes the fake tips on it are ridiculous.

The spiritual successor to the MS6's fake tips is the Acura TLX A-Spec. Yes these are fake tips with little real tips hovering in them like the MS6.

on cars with multiple engine/exhaust tip options, you can have multiple corresponding lower fascia pieces that connect to a common painted fascia. These pieces are smaller and cheaper to tool than having a whole different one-piece rear fascia for each engine/exhaust tip option.

“so why not just have it underneath?”

Ground clearance (you’ll notice modern fascias are generally lower to the ground) and design #aesthetic.

Yeah, I see it as equivalent to the fake window stripes on the Queen Mary 2

Kinja'd!!!

Or, the fake plastic windows that so many cars have now. Its a cheater thing to reduce the visual mass of the body. An easy alternative to just designing the thing properly in the first place.
