Utah, in particular, is particularly difficult on account of POWERFUL dealer lobbies.

Georgia is the same way now. Although their lawsuit got to a point where Tesla pointed out that low volume manufacturers could sell direct.

That law got changed, and any existing manufacturers under the old loophole (read: Tesla) are limited to 5 sales points in the state.

The dealers don’t have consumers’ best interest in mind. I mean, I’m dealing with that now...

I can buy the argument that a system of direct sales COULD encourage manufactures to take advantage of consumers. That being said the current system actually DOES take advantage of consumers, with plenty of documentation and regularity.

The dealer lobby in UT is unreal. They have the most absolute stranglehold on the government there that it’s kind of shocking. I was surprised to hear from my parents recently that they finally ended safety inspections, which was a stealth dealer support system.

I sell cars, and am not so sure what the panacea of this Tesla direct sales model is. Just pay sticker I’d imagine like Carmax or the old Saturn model. Trade ins? Who knows? Certainly no reason for Tesla to trade over any auction value. Warranties? Are they going to extend warranties out of the goodness of their hearts? This is a company which cannot make a nickel except for selling stock, and cannot deliver a single promise on time, only crazy flagship models. They’d love to create a new business model to increase their own bottom line, but if anyone thinks their intent is to do consumers a favor, they need a capitalism 101 lesson.

Ok ill reply to my own post as an afterthought regarding warranties. Who does the consumer go to with issues? Direct to Tesla only? Would you not want an independent agent to act on your behalf? Ever complain to the cable company? Did their rep ever seem like they cared about your side? Hi Comcast, thanks for selling direct, now about issue A..hello? hello?
