Thanks to a long drawn out conversation about ‘stealerships’ on the FP, I came to a realization....

Kinja'd!!!

75% of those morons out there still driving with Takata pipe bombs in their dash haven’t had the recall performed SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY HATE THE DEALERSHIPS.

The government actually issued a deadline to manufacturers to have ONE HUNDRED PERCENT COMPLETION of Takata airbag replacements done by December 31st, 2017.

As easy as that may seem, there are still tens of thousands of cars and trucks out there that haven’t had them replaced.

Why? Well, one of the answers I bet is the one I just realized. People HATE dealerships.

I wonder if they could just give the parts away for free and people could DIY it or have an indy do it. If they hate dealerships that much.

no. a big roadblock is the sheer number of replacements. You got to understand something- the airbag suppliers (all of them) run pretty much at capacity just supplying assembly plants for new production parts. Typically a couple percent of total production are made as “service replacement” parts (the ones on the dealer parts department shelves.)

Takata (or an alternate supplier) basically has to produce service replacement parts for everything they made over the last 15 years. so that’s a “service replacement part” rate of 1500%. That simply cannot be done overnight,. that’s also why car makers are prioritizing replacements in higher-risk (hot and humid) regions. My Ranger supposedly has a suspect passenger side inflator, but because it was originally sold in Canada and re-registered in Michigan it’s not yet up for recall notice.

So, the same people who won’t go to a doctor for a checkup because they hate doctors - and end up dying younger because something wasn’t caught in time?

I had mine done a couple of years ago and had the service manager show me the part numbers on the receipt so I could verify that it had actually been changed. It’s not that I didn’t trust them, I just wanted to be certain.

If you hate a dealership so much to not have free work done to save you from potentially dying you deserve to get airbag daggers to the face.

No. Recalls must be performed by an authorized dealer. Even as a former tech and dealer employee I would not be allowed to perform my own recall ‘at home’, ESPECIALLY not a safety recall.

Yeah.... I’m one of those....

My 2005 LGT has the recall... I just can’t force myself to set up the appointment to get the recall done.

You really ruffled some feathers on the front page. I felt bad. Honestly I don’t care what dealer techs do to my car as long as it is as clean as when I left it, no new dents or scratches, and no new smells. But that’s just me.

I have a literal PILE of replacement inflators where I work. Supply isn’t the problem for me, not anymore....

Same can’t be said for every manufacturer, but our problem (FCA) is getting the customers to come in.

Mailings, phone calls, e-mails, special loaner programs... none of them are working.

I’ve been waiting about two years and my dealership still doesn’t have a replacement for me...

I like my BMW dealership because they treat me right, give me a free loaner, and are very thorough. Subie dealerships in my AO have been the same. Every FCA dealership I’ve taken my Jeep to has been a shitshow with terrible service, no loaner cars, and crappily done repairs. Despite being under warranty, I did the last repair on my Jeep myself to avoid bringing it in.

I don’t hate dealerships. I hate certain dealerships.

No, most people who don’t go to te doctor in America can’t afford to because they have shitty or non existant health insurance.

It doesn’t bother me. I knew I was in for a boring day at work and saw the opportunity to piss off people who hate dealerships. So I took it.

BMW replaced my airbag and washed/vacuumed my car. If I had full coverage insurance (lol) they would have given me a loaner with a 100 mile/day limit.

OK, for sure there are people like that - - but I’ve known plenty of people who do have the means/insurance to go to the doctor - and STILL don’t do it.

Not coincidentally, a number of those people are no longer with us...

Sadly, it’s the passenger side airbag that needs replaced. (and no one ever rides on that side).

But I already do have a Momo steering wheel! (They came from the factory with a Momo stamped wheel).

Lots of dealers are using the recall as a sales tool. Putting people with older cars into shiny new rentals sometimes turns people into new car buyers.

Oh, and every broken thing on the cars sometimes turns into a job for the tech.

So many of these cars haven’t been to a dealer since the day the papers were signed, and are severely in need of services.

We’re SUPPOSED to gather them into a 200pc pallet, and call to have them picked up... but no one is really counting them. We could give them back to customers, turn them into IEDs, etc.

I don’t hate stealerships, I just hate sales people, including SAs and salesmen. It’s by design their job to not work in your favour.

In fact I love chatting up the techs and parts guys, and I know the techs are all working under pressure.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people live a multiple-hour drive from the nearest dealer and it would be a big deal to get there. “The car still runs, why bother?”

Back when my late grandmother developed the illness that would take her life, she had to go for treatment in a hospital. The eldest daughter, my oldest aunt, pushed to control her treatment.

While my mom would listen to and take the advice of the doctors, my aunt claimed that the doctors were out to harm them and couldn’t be trusted. My aunt also claimed that my mom was trying to unfairly gain control over all their affairs for personal benefit. Somehow, my other aunt and uncle trusted my oldest aunt completely.

My family is no longer on speaking terms with any of the aunts, uncles, and cousins involved.

That’s sad that something that’s already terrible (your grandmother’s illness) ended up splitting your family apart, on top of that.

Doctors aren’t any more perfect than anyone else, and it’s good to be involved with her treatment and ask questions, but your aunt sounds like she went off the rails.

I don’t think we’ve received a notice that the replacement parts are available yet, but Canada is a low priority for the recall, since most cases seem to be triggered by high humidity.
