Nissan Rogue door handles:

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

It doesn’t seem to serve a purpose unless another market got a much larger exterior door handle.

Flat area is easier to attach door handles to.

They might’ve found that there was a slight aerodynamic advantage to recessing it like that. Just a wild guess though

You look at a modern Nissan, any of them, and THIS is what bothers you?

Also, a cheap way to look less cheap.

You know what really pisses me about the Rogue? They had this nice, 3D-ish chrome “V” grille which was a bit contrived but interesting nonetheless...

Kinja'd!!!

And on the facelift it’s like someone just smooshed it into a wall, the front is practically just a plane with zero 3D surfacing. That and everything around the “V-motion” grille looks like it just splatted across the car’s face like a giant insect was just killed.

I’m, not a fan of the eighth and ninth gen Honda Civic, but the door handles on the eighth gen Honda Civic look great.

May have had an issue with door skin flex when pulling the handle. The extra “rib” created when the outer pocket was stamped reinforced the handle area of the door skin a bit.

Thinking about it when writing this post, I’ve got a 15 Pathfinder (same color even!) in the shop now, it’s got the recessed pocket at the front of the handle only.

I’m thinking that crease is to give more strength to the sheet metal. or to add these

i’ve got a 14 pathfinder.

the 15 is the years with the fake shift points right?

I think so. I’m just fixing a couple minor dents on the passenger side, so we’ve not really had it moving fast enough to “shift”, but a quick Google search leads me to believe the ‘15 is a revised CVT, and a number of other results indicate they like to “shudder” or “jerk”, which I’m guessing may be the fake shifts.

Edit: Holy run-on sentence.

As an avid fan of straight lines, everything about the Rogue bothers me. I’m not opposed to curves, mind you. But this is a hot mess, IMO.

Good point, it would look so depressingly cheap if pulling the door handle would visibly warp the door skin!

no the shudder or jerk is normally signs of a failing tranny.

They changed mine just this april. fake shifts is just not a constant acceleration and to me is against the point of a cvt. they got rid of the fake shifts in 2016-2017. They only made the fake shifts to make the transmission feel like a regular auto transmission

I was behind a Rogue on the road the other day and I noticed a large rust band across the muffler. and then I wondered why someone would make the muffler so obviously visible. like that’s a thing that is guaranteed to have the superficial condition deteriorate, that seems really dumb to stick it broadside and exposed to everyone.

Every American Nissan model just screams cheap and gaudy now. They take the styling cues of RoW models and gigantify the shiny bits to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Why does the Altima have a huge chrome bar in the back, which has neither any styling attachment to the nearby taillamps or trunk lid, nor any depth and texture?

Why does the Nissan badge have to be so big that it practically occupies its entire grille surround?

The only USDM Nissan model that looks remotely upscale is the Maxima, and even that looks contrived with random lines and bends everywhere. This is the same direction in which the Camry is heading—non-functional styling overload.

I’m firmly in the “three pedal” camp until my left knee decides it doesn’t want to do anything while driving anymore.

My poor father nearly had an aneurysm the first time he drove a CVT vehicle when car shopping a couple years ago, solely because “the damned thing doesn’t shift”, as he put it. He wanted nothing to do with a car that didn’t change gears when you buried the skinny pedal, which might in part explain Nissan’s fake shifting points.

It’s hilarious to see the metal thickness changes from the ‘60s to current production.

My shop does collision repair as well as restoration work. More than once, when explaining why I needed to replace a panel, I’ve “knocked” on a customers door, creating a tinny, hollow sound. I’ll then walk them over to a ‘50s or ‘60s vintage product we’re working on, and “knock” on a door, creating a sound similar to hitting an empty barrel with a wooden baseball bat.

Another fun one is windows. Quite a few current production cars have doors that “flex” slightly when the windows are rolled up and down (usually visible via interior trim panel movement). After door shell replacements, I’ve had customers notice this movement. More often than not, they’re promptly jaw-agape when I show them the other three doors on the car do the exact same thing.

i had only 3 pedal cars since 1995 to 2015 when i crashed my SX4 and took the insurance money and bought a 2014 pathfinder. No awd 7 passenger had 3 pedals anyways....

Now that door skins are as cosmetic as they are protective, it’s not a big deal in terms of functionality. As a 90s kid, I’m used to the modern thinness of stamped outer body steel.

I remember a current generation Corolla that I sat in briefly, where I could hear the tinny “wonk” of the warping door skin stamping when I shut either of the front doors (which has an uninterrupted surface area larger than the rear doors). This sound lasted longer than the “chunk” of the door latch, which made it especially noticeable. And depressingly cheap. I think $2 worth of foam would have helped a lot, but beancounters gonna beancount.

Mine are the W126 S-class and the Porsche 993.

Good analogy. It’s like the high school girl who wore about a pound of make-up all over her face, leading to claimed ghost sightings at school.

Now, that R32 Skyline and that Z32 Fairlady Z...

Huh. I never looked at it that closely before. That shallow recess kinda makes it look like a small door is supposed to close over it, to be smooth with the rest of the body when closed. Like a fuel door.

The Micra is not bad, but its Renault sister looks better. But the Nissan’s interior looks much better and upscale than the Clio’s

For me the Clios have got uglier as time went on. I liked the Mk2 phase 1 and 2s, but the Mk3 didn’t do it for me.

I don’t like the new Renault grilles either.
