Kinja'd!!!

The UCS Falcon is impressive but 799.99 is not

Kinja'd!!!

The F40 is a little more reasonable at 99.99

Kinja'd!!!

Alas, I’ll have to make do.

The Caterham is a steal at $79.99

$25 was my limit today. Next time.

I seem to remember lots of sets costing +/- $0.10/brick, but that ratio goes out the window when it comes to branded or limited edition sets, especially for Star Wars.

Branding and limited edition is why the Falcon is so expensive. Disney wants their damn money.

It’s also the biggest set ever. That doesn’t help.

Agreed. Lego needs an “addict” price rate.

Saturn V, on the other hand, would be quite a good deal if it wasn’t constantly out of stock.

Or you can do what I do, and play with virtual Lego bricks in LDD. Not near enough to the real thing, but it helps!

Yeah, the sets that are purely Lego’s own, are cheaper part for part than any of the licensed sets. Pretty sure the Star Wars sets are the most expensive per brick out of all their licensed sets.

It’s all licensing fees, although this new Millennium Falcon is the biggest and most expensive kit Lego has released. From the reviews I’ve watched for it, it seems like it’s worth it but I’m not in a position to be dropping 800$ on a kit right now.

At $800 for 7,541 bricks, the +/-$0.10/brick ratio holds true for this set.

Dang, I didn’t realize it has so many bricks.

Can confirm, the Saturn V is awesome. Gets a bit repetitive while building, but that’s what you get with what’s practically a tube.

Might be best to backorder it, I had to wait about 2 months between ordering and them having it in stock.

My son is just getting into “regular” legos (he’s 5). He just got this for his birthday and it’s awesome. He and I spent probably 45 minutes assembling it, where he did nearly all the work (hence the 45 minutes). But his attention was incredible, and this thing is cool besides.

Kinja'd!!!

He is getting more for Christmas, for sure. Maybe I can convince his grandparents to spring for the F40, that is awesome.

As others have said, the sets generally average about 10¢/piece, but they usually round down, not up. What bugs me is all the stupid little added crap they use to drive up the piece count. That MF should cost $750. But if I had $800 lying around doing nothing I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

The UCS set is 8 times as expensive as the F40 because it has nearly 8 times the number of pieces.

I still have 2+ 5 gallon buckets of Lego from when I was a kid. My one uncle from arizona used to get me them for christmas.

Now wait just a minute, Mr. Math. At which point are you rounding?

If you round down the number of pieces, it’s $800/7,500 giving us $0.1067/brick, which is $0.11/brick when properly rounded.

If you keep the full number of pieces, it’s $800/7,541 giving us $0.1061/brick, still $0.11/brick when properly rounded.

I truncated the second calculation to get my estimate.

:)

7541 pieces at 10¢/piece would be $754 (and 10¢). Lego is asking $799. Hence, they are rounding up. It should cost $750. Or am I missing something?

Kinja'd!!! "TheRealBicycleBuck" (therealbicyclebuck)

Perhaps the +/- part?

I’m not a Lego fan, so I’m not well-versed in their prices. I wasn’t aware that they usually round the final price down. Nobody said anything about that!

What those prices have in common is, very roughly, a 10-cent-per-piece price point. Which, as much as I love Legos, is a bit ridiculous considering how many of them are these:

Turns out you can build them together, more or less forever. My teenage son and I built a big table with bins and drawers in our basement, combining my (large collection of) childhood Legos with his, and get together on weekends to add buildings and vehicles to a growing city.
