Kinja'd!!!

I know Irma will get weaker, but the scenes are eerily similar to Haiyan and I can’t shake it off my mind.

Irma loves you. The eye looks like a heart in this picture.

Yeah this thing is a monster. The scary part is that it still hasn’t hit a major population area yet, but there is a good possibility that it might. It would be unprecedented especially considering we are still just beginning to clean up from Harvey and our emergency services are already stretched thin. My thoughts and prayers definitely go out to everyone currently in it path and everyone who has already been left in it’s wake.

Thankfully the brunt of it missed Puerto Rico, though they’ll be without electricity for a while.

A family friend works in the Dominican Republic. She lives on high ground, but works with people in the low ground.

One estimate I read was 6 months without power.

The brunt of the storm would’ve given them quite a shunt. It’s an affront to all on the hunt for a stationary front. It takes real grunt to prepare for these blunt winds; many punt. All’s not clear on the eastern front. That Irma, she’s quite a... bitch.

That’s what I’ve heard too. I just can’t imagine going without power for something like 4~6 months.

But a co-worker’s husband is actually in Puerto Rico right now. They own a condo there and he just went down a few weeks ago to check on it and do some maintenance. But was not able to get out before the storm arrived. She is working from home today so I haven’t had a chance to find out how he has fared. But apparently he is originally from Puerto Rico and he was fairly nonplussed about the impending storm. Still this is a much nastier storm than even they are used to, and their condo is just blocks from the ocean, so I hope he made it through alright.

I don’t think they will be without power for six months once the FEMA money arrives.

Miami is a marvel of a city. Some parts could take a hurricane straight on and be ready to sell you a mojito after a brief sweeping of the porch. They actually maintain a fund and taxes to ensure the city is fortified.

I am in StPete/Tampa and on the Red Cross Rescue Teams as well as occasionally offering my skills/talents to the City. However, I have a full time job who doesn’t want to release me for a few days to help the City/State. I am pissed.

Oh I have no doubt that Miami and Florida in general is far better equipped in every possible way to deal with a storm like this than Texas was. Tropical storms are just a fact of life in Florida. Still I think flooding could also be a major concern there. I mean flooding is already a concern there, and who knows just how much rain and storm surge this hurricane is going to bring along with it. The only really good thing is that the storm isn’t going to linger like Harvey did around Houston.

Yeah that’s crazy that they won’t give you time off to help people in the face of this storm bearing down on Florida. It’s just amazing that some people can be so short sighted.
