You Can Get Excited About Kia, I Won't Tell Anyone

Let’s just call this Proceed Concept what it actually is, the Stinger Sport Turismo Concept. Peter Schreyer is supposed to retire this year and Luc Donckerwolke is to be the global head of design for Kia, Genesis, and Hyundai. That said, I think Kia’s European Design Cheif Gregory Guillaume is already the perfect successor to Schreyer.

Yeah, you’re thinking the same thing Im thinkin’. The Stinger would look so much better without all the mid 2010's ornamentation all over the body. If it ain’t Baroque don’t fix it on. Keep a Handel on your design lines. Always Bach away from A Minor offense because it can B Major! Ok okay, thats enough.

If you’re done chaconne out this stuff then let’s move on.

Huh, I didn’t realize how many design cues Kia has once you include the GT stuff coming from Guillaume. Have a look at the refreshed Sorento and you’ll see what I mean about the front end design cues.

.

That new GT face transcribes nicely onto the utilities. The Sorento would just need that sharkblade C-pillar from the new concept and it would look pretty unique for a CUV.

Now hurry up and hit me with a Sedona!

( I’ve always wanted to end a post with that).

*Edit: Because you’re here already, tell me if you think Car and Driver are a bit excited over this Kia as well.

My only beef with the wagon is the same I’d say about the panamera. It looks like it has minimal more cargo room more than its hatch counterpart. I think for the panamera it’s 2 cubic feet. Give me a goddamn level roof and some rails and 4-8 extra inches of length. Otherwise, yes transmission aside, I’d gladly rock a Kia soul (whatever the fast one is) and stinger garage.

I support this statement.

Actually, that Stinger looks so good. So good. The goodest.

Upside down faux floating C-pillar? Jesus wept.

If that “blade” is just a piece of trim and not an actual pillar that stops (LOL right), it’s a faux pillar, which seems to be among the tailfin-style fads for this decade. Different for the sake of different, would you like a 58 Olds or a 61 Plymouth? Of course, by production time, this will be dumbed down like the faux floating pillars on Nissan products (I assume the greenhouse proportions will also be different, and that the actual car might have mirrors). Not something I would embrace if I claimed to not like ornamentation.

The wheels on the Stinger are fine, not a fan of the petal-style wheels on the “Proceed” - petal wheels are another fad that needs to stop yesterday. Welcome to 1958 (without the viable middle class).

For having a “fintail” car, you sure seem to be against any style.

The blade pillar isn’t new and can look good, imho.

“Style” isn’t good just by existing. The fintail cars were widely panned and then neglected due to their styling for decades - only relatively recently have they been saved. MB was as cynical as modern makers for the style too, not wanting to admit the fins were following an American fad, but claiming they were reversing aids.

I can only hope this becomes amusing kitsch like an Edsel or 58 Buick. For now, it is a way for suburbanites in appliances to pretend to not be boring. Kind of like 1958.

I forgot about the DS3, must be the pioneer, like the Opel Adam is for the faux floating C-pillar. I suppose it differentiates itself.

One thing I will give Kia credit for - no A-pillar DLO fail in these modern designs.

I mean, that is what car design is:

For now, it is a way for suburbanites in appliances to pretend to not be boring. Kind of like 1958.

Except for like every year after 1950.

Not every year. There have been high spots (for the excess of 1958, 1955 was clean, 1965 was very clean, points in the 80s and 90s were clean) and not so high spots (late 50s-early 60s, parts of the 70s). This isn’t a high spot. I don’t think faux floating pillars and predator maws will be seen as tasteful classic cues in 50 years. This is the most overstyled point in a generation, if not more. The new 1958.

I think in terms of a movement, car design is groupthink and following others.

They don’t put a MT in their “cool” new cars, and I won’t be able to afford one for 15 years. So I am not excited, but I am thankful they are not ugly when I am stuck behind one in traffic.
