How do you test?

I’ve heard cigar smoke in the brake booster, I’ve heard an open propane torch (not lit, of course) along the lines... what’s your best tips and tricks for checking vacuum leaks?

Got an air compressor?

I’ve pumped 5psi into the system and listened for the hiss. Doesn’t work the best if there are check valves involved though.

Fill a 20 oz. bottle with smoke (many ways) and squeeze the smoke via hose adapter into system.

Smoke machines are so dang rad, i;ve been spoiled to perfect old school methods

Plug it in. Turn it on. If it sounds like a vacuum, it works. (Sorry; I couldn’t resist.) I hope you are having a pleasant day.

I think I saw someone use starting fluid, or something similar. Maybe an unlit propane torch. Probably the latter. A little jump in rpm indicates the leak location.

I bought one of those vacuum gauges, but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. In my case I am going to assume the answer is “yes”. I know for sure there is a leak at the heater control.

Smoke is best, we have a machine that uses baby oil that’s slick. Failing that, the cigar smoke trick does work, but can take awhile to fill the system unless it’s being stoked. Small shots of brake cleaner will sometimes reveal leaks when it’s running, but that can be a fire hazard depending on where you’re looking.

You can borrow, for free, vacuum testers from most auto parts stores. As I had a Mercedes from the 70's at one point I got pretty good at using a combo of the tester and golf tees to plug lines to narrow down where the leak might be. Kind of a satisfying game really.

The best “quick and dirty” if you want to determine IF you have a leak and get a basic idea of the location is spraying carb cleaner/brake cleaner/starter fluid around your engine bay whilst idling.

i get some wd, or some carb cleaner, or some starting fluid, and i spray the gasket seams. if the idle picks up, there is a leak.......
