This thing.

Kinja'd!!!

Three door Sierra, a model sold in mainland Europe with a variety of specs but only as a Cosworth in rhd. This one had the 2.0 injected engine, another rarity.

That’s the body style we got over here as the XR4Ti.

This one has the changed taillight design from the first facelift (so 1987+) but not the smoked glass from the second facelift (1990+), so it’s from 1987-1990?

These used to be everywhere, but it’s been ages since I’ve seen one.

Close but not quite. We got the body with the split rear windows which was used on higher trims (V6 only I believe) in Europe.

You got the performance version only in the US. And pre-facelift only as well, if I recall correctly. The difference is clearly visible at the front, but as we’re only seeing the rear here the clue is in the taillight. The part that’s wrapped around the side is round at the post facelift, and triangular at the pre-facelift.

The weird beam splitting the rear window in two is something we only got on the XR4i versions, not on the regular ones.

Most of these were 5-doors or wagons. Or, post facelift, sedans. The 3-door was always rare.

Pre-facelift 5-door with the old taillights:

post-facelift sedan with the new taillights. Which looked the same from behind but different from the side.

I was born in the early 80s, so as a young kid I grew up around these and could notice all the details :)

That was used here only for the XR4 I think.

That photo brings back memories. For a while my dad had a 1985 Merkur XR4Ti just like that XR4i. Same wheels and everything. It was mint with only 35k mi when he sold it in 2013 or 2014. He considered using it as his dailyish driver but parts are impossible to find. True story, he bought the very last set of front fenderliners in the entire world for it.

My father-in-law had an ZR4Ti for a while - fun car. My sister-in-law (a teen at the time) set her keys on that big double wing and forget them. They made it over 20 miles and her dad found them right where she left them after he parked in his office garage downtown.
