Been dealing with a google drive issue for a few weeks now; basically google used to have a tool that uploaded all your pictures and video automatically to their cloud for pics and you could upload as many as you wanted for free at a reduced size. Then they changed to a new tool and its been uploading all my pictures and raw files in full res to my drive which quickly clogs it up fast, even though my settings all indicate that I only want the free unlimited option. This is a problem because gmail and drive are tied storage so once its full I can’t even attach anything to email, or get attachments.

Mostly the 13 reply back and forth with support has been helpful and they’ve been quick to respond with acknowledgements of no wrong doing on my part. Something something backend bug, known problem.

Last night I sent in a grundle of screen shots per request to see if their fix had taken effect. The response back -

“Thank’s for the response!

Hi,

Based on the screen shot you’ve sent, It seems storage are still on your Google Drive. To get more space, I recommend deleting large items from your Google drive. Lastly, Items in your Trash still take up space. Learn how to empty your trash .

Thanks!”

It seems the problem is that storage are still on my drive...

I tend not to be an ass with support but this was the response they got back from me. Seriously.

Escalate. Escalate that shit right meow. If they have some puddinghead like this reeling off rote/script without review of issue history and his English is *this bad*, sooner or later he’s going to really fuck somebody up, and there will be hell to pay. Short version: He. Has. No. Business. Managing. Tech.

Amazon has unlimited picture storage at any res if you have Prime. Plus their PC app for it isn’t god awful. Probably not the answer you wanted to hear but I gave up on google drive’s automated backups with their god awful horrible hateful PC app and have switched everything to Amazon. I tried for months to get Google’s POS PC backup program to work the way I wanted and just ended up giving up. My smartphone still backs up to Google though.

Oh Google Drive picture management. Do let me know if you succeed.

I have basically the EXACT same problem, but haven’t run out of space so I keep deferring dealing with it.

My other issue is, you used to be able to just have a Google Drive desktop app that contained all your Google Drive folders (this is still true) but it also had a folder called “Photos” which was all those photos that have been backed up from your phone, etc. So periodically, I’d cut/paste the oldest photos from that folder onto various backup devices and move on with my life, quickly and easily restoring huge amounts of space on my Google Drive.

Now, that folder no longer exists. The photos are like the way Apple handles them, you can only view them in a huge set of thumbnails in a cheesy web interface and you can’t download, for example, a year’s worth of photos at once. I have to do them a month or so at a time, which is sort of OK, but it’s tedious.

The bad English I can forgive on account of smart back end people may not always have English as a first language... Plus who am I to critique... But the less than phoned in effort is pretty poor
