Teach me about the 2nd gen Equinox.

The future Mrs. Chris_K_F drives an FR-Slow will be car shopping soon with a budget of around $15k. She wants an SUV or crossover for a couple of reasons.
1) She doesn’t like sitting so low current car is a ‘10 Civic, previous was a ‘13? Fiesta, which she actually liked a lot.
2) We have a dog, and she wants lots of room to transport him to and fro.

My immediate top pics for her are used CR-Vs, RAV4s, Santa Fe, Tucson, and CX-5 or 3 if it could be found within the price range. Ford Edge is probably on the list too, since I’ve been fairly impressed with newer Ford models.

She’s recently mentioned that she really likes the Equinox, but I’m mostly unfamiliar with them. Pricing, mileage, and options on used 2014 models seems attractive enough, and reviews for that year aren’t bad either. Not great, but not bad. Seems like a solid B student. I’ve just been a bit wary of GM models do to some of their history, but as I said, I don’t have enough personal experience with them to make a more educated call in that regard.

Thoughts? Input? Other suggestions?

Do your thing, Oppo. (I know this is everyone’s favorite game)

Functional, practical, vehicles. I personally despise them.

They aren’t bad crossovers at all. The 2.4 is a little underpowered but if it’s been taken care of the only real issue is exhaust manifolds cracking on some of them (no rhyme or reason as to what or why it’s caused really). Earlier models burned oil but there’s a special coverage for it and the cam phasers liked to die. 3.6s stretch timing chains quick if you don’t keep up with oil changes and changing the oil filter is a bit of a bitch. Really though, they’re solid cars if not that engaging to drive.

I think it’s hideous, but Ford is releasing the EcoSport which is a Fiesta based crossover.

You should totes get a second FR-Slow. You can have a “his and hers” set!! :D

Or, fine...get the Equinox. lol From what I fear they aren’t going to amaze, but they’re otherwise as solid as solid can be.

Bland, but totally fine. I know a few people with them. Pretty slow with the 4-banger. They have more room than the CX-5.

It’s a regular car-based CUV. While classified as a compact CUV, it’s a relatively large compact CUV. It’s on the borderline between compact and mid-size..

The GMC version is called the Terrain.

The fuel economy won’t be that great unless you stick to the FWD/4 cyl model.

If you’re getting the V6, apparently the earlier 3.0L (from 2010 to 2012) and 3.6L (2013 to 2017) get about the same fuel economy... but the 3.6L has better power... particularly at lower rpm.

Here’s a review:

http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/chevrolet/equinox/2013/#r137918

Also of note that there is a redesigned Equinox coming out in 2018.

And the new model is all-4 cyl.

If she wants one of these with good power, get one with the 3.6L. If she doesn’t, get a 4 cyl one.

Also, the Japanese competitors you mention don’t have V6 engines.

But you can get a manual in the CRV and CX-5. For the best fuel economy, a manual CRV or CX-5 would likely be the best bet.

And if you want a CUV of this size with the most power, then look for a Ford Edge with the 2.7L Ecoboost introduced in 2015... 315HP and 350 torques at a low 2700 rpm.

You need to present it properly. Don’t say “Ugh those are crap,” even if you think they are crap. Say “This is a big purchase and we need to make sure we get the right one. Let’s look at not just an Equinox, but a few other options as well just to make sure.” Then take her to go look at what you think are better options.

If she still wants a used Equinox after looking at the other options, make sure you get a good used one from a reputable source, and keep up on maintenance. They also lease pretty well, so if you’re open to leasing that is another avenue to explore.

She likes some of the other models too, so definitely open to looking.

I’m generally been against leasing, but I’ve been thinking about looking into it for her more.

If all she needs is to sit up high and have lots of room for the dog, why not just get a pickup truck? You should be able to get a pretty decent ‘12-14ish Tacoma for $15k and the money you save in repairs and depreciation over a generic CUV should more than pay for the difference in MPG in the long run.

Idk that she’d want a truck. Plus, an SUV or CUV allows for better covered transportation of the dog. A pup in the bed of a pickup during a Chicago snow storm isn’t ideal. I would be in favor of a 4th gen 4Runner though! Not sure she would, but it’s worth a shot.

Camper top! 4th gen 4Runners are really nice. I’d expect she would find them a bit rough compared to a newer SUV though and the 5th gen is still too expensive. Regarding the Equinox... they are very meh. Not bad, but nothing stands out. I’m a big fan of CR-V’s - they are packaged very well to the point of feeling almost cavernous inside and still get decent MPG and ride/handle above average. FWIW I owned a previous generation Santa Fe for a while and it was a great reliable vehicle. Not sure if that holds true for the current ones but I really liked mine and never really had a problem for 120k miles. One thing to be aware of with Hyundai is that they used to require quite a bit of rather expensive maintenance like timing belts every 60k. Again, not sure if that’s still true but you might want to look at the an owner’s manual for the schedule before buying if you do end up leaning that way.
