Kinja'd!!!

So many wonderful, beautiful places are burning, so many people are at risk of losing everything they have. The ten largest active fires alone ( out of 198 active sites ) have burned an area the size of the state of Delaware. There are fires in Yosemite, Glacier National Park, Crater Lake, the Columbia River Gorge, and the Sequoia National Forest, not to mention the ones threatening Los Angeles, Missoula, and other cities. To all the western Oppos, I hope you and your loved ones are safe.

Things are fudging scary right now. These fires, Harvey, and the strongest Atlantic storm ever Irma barreling towards Florida. My heart pours out for so many people. :’(

Emergency mapper like myself are digging Modis - (or Eye of Modar as we call it in our EOC). I look at the Canada data;

https://fsapps.nwcg.gov/googleearth.php?sensor=modis&extent=canada

but US is there too;

https://fsapps.nwcg.gov/googleearth.php?sensor=modis&extent=conus

We download the Fire Radiative Power data in kml from the last 24hrs and add it to current perimeters to get an idea of where things are;

Flew a trip two days ago from Denver to Sacremento, then down the length of Cali and back up it again. Smoke from the LA area fire had stretched completely to Denver at that point and we flew over all that brown haze the whole way. Such a bad deal this year.

And they might lose the Lake McDonald Lodge soon as well

I keep obsessively checking on the fire in the Columbia River Gorge, because that’s where Multnomah Falls and a number of other incredible giant waterfalls are, it’s one of my favorite places in the world. MODIS is showing the hotspots to have already overtaken Oneonta Falls, Ponytail/Horsetail Falls, McCord Creek Falls, Wahclella Falls, Punch Bowl Falls, and Tunnel Falls, and is knocking on the door of Multnomah. Multnomah is the biggest concern, because it has the historic lodge on site.

Good news is that waterfalls probably won’t be affected, bad news is the trees around it might look a little different for a bit.

Keep in mind Modis has a 1km resolution (just over half a mile) - so it isn’t super accurate. Also it can get false positives from heat in the smoke clouds, Both of these were mentions by the wildfire guys as cautions against using it standalone.

Yeah, I know the waterfalls themselves will be fine, but there’s an extensive network of trails, trail bridges (including some massive walkway bridges), and signs that will have to be rebuilt.

I’m here in Portland, watching places I’ve spent countless hours hiking and camping literally go up in smoke :(

I don’t have words to express my disgust with the kids that started it the eagle creek fire.

Yeah. I heard how it started with some idiots and fireworks. Hopefully they’re charged, convicted, and sentenced without leniency

Between this and the hurricanes, nature is being particularly brutal right now.

yeah... as icky as our hot, smoke filled air is I’d take it any day over 185mph sustained winds... Irma looks off the charts crazy.

just checked the map - looks like it shows a new hot spot right above the falls...

A couple weeks ago I was on the ridge east of Crystal that the Norse Creek fire ran up today - looks right about where I was standing...

So infuriating and stupid. So many hikers were stranded on that trail after the fire started too. I understand that kids can be dumb, but this goes way beyond that. And it’s scary seeing that there is no relief in sight…how much of the gorge are we going to lose? There are enough natural wildfires this year as is – the last thing we need is idiots starting more on their own.

We were camping this past weekend in the Mt. Hood wilderness having such a great time and planning to take my wife on her first backpacking trip back in that area in 2 weeks. By the time we drove back home on Monday there was ash falling out of the sky…don’t see that backpacking trip happening at this point – just hope too much of the gorge and peoples’ homes aren’t lost in the meantime at least.
