Because you just couldn’t get enough death and destruction from Harvey, Irma is now setting her sights on the Caribbean and Florida. Already a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 185 mph, Irma is now the second most powerful Atlantic storm on record and could reach intensities that are, as of now, only theoretical. This is one to keep an eye on, folks.

As of 2:00 pm ET, sustained winds were at 185 mph. For comparison, Katrina blew 174 mph at its height.

based on what Harvey did, the ECMF model is the one to pay the most attention to.

I was told I have to wait midweek to hear if it tracks east to the Carolinas. NJ can’t handle another hurricane if it does.

Holy smokes...This could be a storm to reach levels previously thought to be only theoretical. I mean, Irma spawned while Harvey was not just fresh, but if I recall was still dumping rain in many areas.

Well at least it makes all of your other problems go away temporarily. Nobody can blame you for ignoring lifes responsibilities when you have 10 feet of sea water in your home.

I think it’s still a bit early to say for sure, but there’s little to slow it down.

Honestly, keeping our cars and important belongings safe (besides ourselves, of course) is our main priority. We’ve already prepared the house, bought a lot of gas, prepared our supplies, and made an emergency plan in case shit goes badly. In the case of bad flooding, we’ll take my dad’s F150 and drive to Orlando, Gainesville, or Tallahassee while everything is settled.

I’m not looking forward to this.

That’s rough. We’ve had a few customers call in today because they need their info before the storm hits. This job has kinda made natural disasters more real in my eyes since we don’t get them too often in the Chicagoland area

Hurricanes are never fun. Even if it doesnt hit you, the inability to buy milk/bread/eggs at the grocery stores for like a week is just annoying. And the lines at gas stations... All of that just in anticipation of the storm. When really the only preparation worth doing is to get out if your location is unsafe. Otherwise you just make sure you have water and then you’re good.

Alright, look here. In nine months, when these babies start popping out, NONE of them better be named “Harvey” or “Irma”.

Not the most poetic of names. But we do have TS Jose on the way, too. My money is on Jose staying offshore, though.

Latest I’ve seen is it could hit Cuba before heading for Florida, which would weaken it a little.

I dont see how it would make such a sharp turn. This hurricanne will cause lots of damage no matter where it goes. Hopefully it’s not going to Texas or where im at south Louisiana. Gas prices are already high and my generator is empty and so is my fridge :O

The path depends entirely on what weather patterns the storm encounters as it tracks westward. The reason that Harvey was such a disaster is that the storm came up against intractable high pressure over Texas and simply stalled. These are all computer models, and may not be entirely accurate, but weather modeling has become exceedingly good in the last few years. As the colors become more washed out in the map, the path becomes more uncertain. Those colors will intensify in coming days.

Got some pictures yesterday on my phone when I saw at least 8 military choppers fly overhead and land at the local mini airport.

Gonna be a weird weekend.

The governor activated the entire TXNG in response to Harvey. Lots of activity overhead, even in Austin, and convoys of military trucks heading to the coast.
