For awhile, there was a number of folks buying old stock cars and playing with them as road race cars with crate motors, especially under the auspices of NASA’s ASC class. My understanding is that they were plentiful and cheap on the used market, and I’m told they were actually entertaining to muscle around a track. They are probably one of the cheapest ways into a purpose-built, tube frame car with fenders.
An autocross isn’t a bad way to do an initial shakedown a new, or new to you, racecar. It’ll let you see if it runs, turns and otherwise goes around under it’s own power without anything falling off, self destructing or otherwise having catastrophic problems without spending any real money. It’ll give you enough info to know if they car is ready for a full shake down at speed on a track.
