So after my post last week, I was jonesing for a Street Triple really bad. I couldn’t get over how it felt like a perfect SV, only with power and refinement. I went out and bought this low mileage (2100 miles !?!) 2014 Street Triple R on Sunday.

The ride back was nothing special, got on it a few times, but the route was all highway. It was comfy and composed, but the highway is not the stomping ground of the Street Triple. This is the stomping ground of the Streeet Triple.

Met up with a few riding buddies to test the bike through one of my favorite routes, its a good mix of no traffic, tight technical stuff, and medium sweepers. It’s really weird to ride a bike again that’s better than I am to such a large degree, haven’t felt it since my CBR1000RR. It’s definitely a bike that’s going to get me to grow as a rider, but right off the bat I’m faster on this than my SV.

I thought it might just be expectation bias, so I spent last night hitting my normal testing grounds SV and STR, back to back. And for the first time, I felt like the SV was holding me back. I listed the SV for sale last night. I initially thought I’d keep both, but I honestly don’t see myself running it very much all with the STR in the garage.

The supermoto stays though, still the fastest thing I own given the right road. :p

A supermoto is basically a dirt bike with street bike tires on it right? What makes it fast compared to a proper street bike? I would figure it would be like a rally car on tarmac and be too squishy and move around a lot. Entertaining but slow.

Entry speed, they weigh almost nothing and have superbike tires, plus the long travel suspension means that on roads that aren’t racetrack smooth the chassis stays stable and controlled no matter how hard you push.

So it’s a friendlier speed?

No actual pace, when I get on sections that are tight enough nothing is faster. Sportbikes are actually really shitty at “not sweepers”, but I can huck the supermoto into tight stuff 15+ mph faster than my sportbike equipped buddies can. Sure, that can catch me on exit and straights, but the real tight stuff, I end up just walking away.

Well that didn’t take long haha. Glad to see you like the Stripper. I think it needs a stripper-esque name, like Bubbles for instance

I had some money burning a hole in my pocket in an account labeled “motorcycle discretionary fund” for a while. A small part of every paycheck gets routed there. This was the first bike I’d ridden (of dozens) that really moved something in me moreso than the bikes I own (or at least the comparable bikes, the Grom is still my favorite :p ).

Glad you like it! Wish I could’ve come. Afterwards did you feel like you just got done rolling in an ashtray?

It was actually remarkably clear on the coast, was able to go visor up for most of the low speed stuff.

On the other hand, riding last night, riding today, feels absolutely gross

It does. Went for a ride last night. My jacket was gray when I got home. Looked like snow falling in front of my headlight. Blech.

Congrats on the purchase! I’m gonna be test riding one tomorrow.

How do you find the riding position? One thing I really like about supersports is the feeling of ‘being one with the bike’ because you’re leaned over so much and essentially part of the machine. Does the Street Triple evoke similar feelings?

You’ll have to see for yourself, I’ve been out of the sportbike game for a long time now, always hated the riding position (feels like sitting on top of the bike rather than one with it to me) but I definitely feel one with the stripper once the road gets tight, I can go all day comfortably, and the slow speed super technical stuff that I always hated on super-sports becomes fun when you have a set of wide bars (and you can lean off the other way like on a supermoto)

Jumped on a 2018 today so I got the 765 engine. Boy was it sweeeet! I don’t recall such a nice sounding stock bike, it must raise hell with a pipe.

That being said, I got onto the highway and felt like a human parachute at even 120 km/hr (75 mph). It definitely needs a windscreen. And I wasn’t such a huge fan of the riding position either but it doesn’t look like you can put clipons on it - maybe a flat bar or something.

My next bike is gonna have a triple. So it’s either this or a Daytona. Need to think and shop around.

Nakeds aren’t for everyone, I guess wind just doesn’t bother me like it does some (I’ve had my Grom at 70 on the highway just fine!). And riding position is such a personal thing, I came up through dirt so I’ll take a nice wide set of bars over clipons 10 times out of 10, even when riding aggressive I like the extra leverage.

Plus my wrists and back start screaming on longer 4+ hour rides with a sport bike position.

Yup, different strokes. I sometimes get weird looks from salespeople when I bring up the topic of clipons when shopping around nakeds. Either way, enjoy your new ride and keep the updates coming!

I bet! Usually people go the other way! Risers or bars on sportbikes
