Kinja'd!!!

I would still like the new mid engine test car GM is playing with to be a Cadillac and not a Corvette. CarBuzz even says it would make sense!

Also, you’ll remember there was some engine info that got out indicating a DOHC V8 getting stuck in the new car. Yes, the C4 ZR1 got that treatment, but there doesn’t seem to be any indication of Chevy moving away from pushrods.

Cadillac, on the other hand, is getting an entirely new DOHC V8 family all to itself... hmmmm.

I think it’s gotta be a Cadillac. It would be the perfect car for the brand. Leave the Corvette as your entry level sports car and have this be the halo car for GM. It could rival the Ford GT, cost insane money, and be limited production; all without ruining the name and sales of the Corvette.

I don’t mind if it’s a Chevy, but it will never be a Corvette. The Corvette has developed a distinct role of “cut-rate front-engined supercar stomper”. You can’t just pull that name and use it somewhere else.

Performance of the Camaro is so close to that of the Corvette now that it only makes sense for the Corvette to go mid-engined. Camaro isn’t going to back down from that either because it has to keep pace with the Mustang (Mustang and Ford GT have a lot of breathing room between one another). Additionally, the older generations aren’t buying as many Corvettes anymore and the mid-engine layout could be an attempt to appeal to younger generations who would care less about “soiling the name of the Corvette”. Similar arguments can be made for the DOHC engine rumors as well; pushrods can only take you so far.

Push rods have won multiple races at Le Mans for the Vette. I think they are fine for the time being. I see no reason for them to switch to DOHC in the Vette. DOHC actually makes me think more so that it is a Cadillac.

Frankly, I’m still getting used to Cadillac being a performance brand over a luxo-barge brand (get off my lawn). A mid-engined car might be the next logical step for what they’re trying to do with Cadillac at the moment, but it’s another step away from a well-established brand identity that I grew so fond of.

But I don’t care about that nearly as much as I’d hate to see this thing replace the Corvette. Corvette’s brand identity is also a well-established thing, and I think that abandoning the front/ front-mid engine layout would cause more outrage than making it a Cadillac.

Is Cadillac’s brand identity not the standard of the world? If it still is then it therefore should produce a mid-engine car right? Prestigious, fast, and exclusive.

As to your second paragraph I could not agree more.

The C6 ZR1 would like to have a word with you CarBuzz....

My problem is in a way it makes sense and in a way it doesnt. The way it would work for Cadillac is they are looking for basically halo sports car that would give them something compete with an R8, NSX, or AMG GT. That would attract higher end customers to look twice at Cadillac, which right now they are having trouble trying to get. But the problem there is they dont have a 7-series, S-Class, or A8 competitor. They need a Flagship car first to set up the Halo car. I mean people are begging for something like the Elmiraj or Escala .

Now if GM sets it up as a Corvette, which i think GM will somewhat branch off like SRT did but better. It will still be a “Chevy” but lets be honest corvette has distanced its self from just being a chevy for awhile now. Just look at racing, its Corvette Racing not Chevy. The way I see it working is putting the Corvette logo at the top and have 3 to 4 branches off

-C8 Base with optional Z51 package (for midlife crisis)
-C8 Grand Sport (up in the air one)
-C8 Z06 or ZR1 (For people who want more but cant afford premium)
-Zora (the mid engine GT and 488 competitor)

To me it makes more sense because it opens more doors to high end enthusiasts because like Ferrari or Lamborghini you are buying a recognized brand, Corvette, in the enthusiast world. Cadillac while having success this year in IMSA has no history on the bigger stages like WEC. The other thing that Corvette is aiming for is a younger audience. To quote Tom Wallace, a previous Corvette Chief engineer,“The median age of the Corvette buyer got three years older while I was there, which scared the hell out of us,”. So GM wants the new halo car to be a poster car which targets younger enthusiasts. Which IMO Corvette is ready for but Cadillac isnt.

That’s just a slogan. And an overly broad one, IMO. Taken to its full extent, they’d have to make the ultimate version of everything. I think that’s a bit too far-reaching. I don’t think they need to have a mid-engined sports car in their lineup any more than there needs to be a Cadillac van.

I see your reasoning and I wouldn’t be totally against a Corvette sub brand but at the same time it just seems a little odd

I don’t believe they’ve been the Standard of the World for a long time, these days, people tend to use that slogan ironically. “Near-Parity with the World” is probably more appropriate.

You are correct. I think however, a mid engine vehicle would be a step in the right direction. To get Cadillac back to that lofty statement
