Dunno if this’ll do anything but it makes me look like I’m a dedicated #racecar driver.

Kinja'd!!!

My rear sway bar bushings are in need of replacement.

Kinja'd!!!

And I discovered something very concerning. Rust on my frame rail. If you have an NB you know that by the time there is visible bulging on the frame rail it means terminal rot has set in and there’s no repairing it. Due to the 2-ply nature of the NB front frame rail construction they’re very prone to moisture sitting between the two layers of steel in the box section and they start rotting from the inside out, which is why once you can see it it means it’s too late.

Kinja'd!!!

Guess I’ll just keep driving it until the next hailstorm hits and hope it gets totaled. God damn it. Car is 100% rust free other than that, there isn’t even surface rust on the control arms or anything. Fuck.

That’s header wrap, it is usually for blocking conductive and then convective heat transfer. It works best when used on the hot objects. For the cold stuff, you’re better off with a radiant heat barrier like the gold foil tape stuff.

It will still work though, the DEI stuff holds up pretty well but if you used the stuff you have to soak in water first it will dry rot after a few months. Also, it’ll hold fluids, like oil, that will smoke off as they heat up (a small amount of oil can make a worrisome amount of smoke).

My condolences.

The NB I daily is to the point where the passenger side sway bar bracket and the chunk of frame it is attached to are swinging freely in total separation from the rest of the frame rail. Maybe it’s time for me to build an Exocet…

My car has stayed within this county and the adjacent its whole life, in Kansas. Annoying. Rust usually isn’t a huge issue here.

Yeah. I probably shouldn’t be driving it at this point, but my Mazda3 had been out of commission several times this summer and so the Miata was a convenient backup.

I’d be curious to see pictures of it that bad.

This is why I have no interest in getting another NB. It’s a fun car, but the rust is a complete deal breaker.

Could be rust on the outer surface, hopefully. It’s probably a good idea to to grind off the surface rust and paint it over. Also, now you need run some aircraft-grade (maybe dryer duct could work but you’re on your own with that) tubing with some clamps from the plastic intake snorkel to the driver’s side wheel well hole. Don’t run the hose too deep as to avoid sucking in water, just through the opening enough so that it’s only drawing in air from the wheel well instead of the engine bay.

Yeah I need to grind it down and POR15 it. Or poke it with a screwdriver and hope it isn’t soft.

I’ve gone through my 5th driver side foglight bulb since I got the car. I’m 20 seconds from saying “Fuck it, they’re brake ducts now”

Eh, I’d go with the OEM foglight covers.

Kinja'd!!!

Or shave off the fog lights entirely like Nippe’s car .
