This will likely be the last new Genesis model that you will be able to purchase at a Hyundai dealership. By 2019, when the GV80 midsize SUV is released alongside the third generation of the Genesis G80 (Hyundai Genesis Sedan), you will only be able to have warranty work done at dedicated Genesis dealerships .

Keep that in mind because you’ll be going from 835 Hyundai dealers which can sell the G80 right now, to what is likely the 352 dealers which choose to sell the G90 and I’m guessing this G70 sedan, to maybe less than 200 stores in the US that can honor your 10 year/100,000 mile warranty for a car brand that has only existed since December of 2015 and began selling its cars in the US in August of 2016. Where you buy may be very different and very far away from where you service.

I know that Im a broken record — those were like giant CDs back in the...oh, some of you guys won’t remember what a CD is anymore...let me try this again — I know I sound like Spotify (is that a thing?) set to repeat (does it have a widget for that?) but Genesis isnt Hyundai’s luxury brand, they are a luxury brand owned by Hyundai. This is more like Tata to Jaguar-Land Rover rather than Toyota to Lexus. Other than the currently shared styling and production in the Ulsan plant there isnt much else shared by the Hyundai cars and the Genesis cars.

But hey, Kia can probably help you out with repairs since they will continue to share platforms and powertrains with Genesis. However, since Kia doesn’t own any stake in Genesis that I know of, nor do they share anything else outside of parts...well that makes their relationship not even a partnership, not even roommates, just the next door neighbor that raids the fridge and leaves crumbs on the counter! Go home, Roger!!

I’m pretty neutral on Hyundai as a brand but I’m all in when it comes to Kia. The Kia to Hyundai relationship isnt Chevy to Buick, it’s (excuse the massive jump in prestige) Audi to Porsche. The sense of Hyundai-over-Kia hierarchy came from Hyundai wanting to make sure it was dominate over its former largest competitor. Imagine if GM bought Ford. That’s pretty much what happened in S. Korea, and I guarantee that you would still favor one automaker over the other. Crazy stuff, man!

It looks good. I cant wait to see it.

Ive been a huge fan of Genesis as a brand. The value quality and luxury you get compared to other brands cant be beat. I would easily pick a G90 over an LS or an S Class.

The question is how much time? Cadillac has been trying to come back since the 2003 CTS and they’re still struggling. Hyundai seems to be following the same path with an initially sedan heavy lineup. However while GM has the Escalade and was able to build some credibility with the V series cars, Hyundai doesn’t have any of that. It will be very difficult for Genesis to shake being considered the discount luxury brand.

This car looks good- - hopefully it has some of the driving dynamics that BMW used to have. If it does, sign me up.

I think Genesis’ pricing strategy is better than Cadillac’s, though. Cadillacs end up with a bunch of cash on the hood, because the MSRP is too high. I think that damages the brand more than lowering stickers, personally.

But yeah, you’re right about the lack of X-overs and SUV’s.

I like how such things always are spotted in Germany, where the market is a lot less likely to accept it than in NA. The roads, no doubt. Prior high end Korean attempts in Europe were hilariously overpriced - your dear Amanti based for more than a basic E-class. But it will sell a few in NA no doubt, the expat community will eat it up too.

I’d look at the relationship more like a GM or Fomoco than Tata - nothing was bought, and some bits are shared.

I think Cadillac is trading too much on the legacy of its reputation and is pricing high because they have to. They can’t risk pricing as a value proposition and admitting to the world that they have fallen so far. Genesis, on the other hand, is almost a clean slate, like Lexus was when it started. They can price as a value option and increase over time as their reputation builds.

But genesis isn’t GM/Cadillac, they will do things differently

There weren’t too many Lexus dealerships in 1990 either.....

I spy a liftback like the Stinger?

Have you heard anything about a Rio SX with the 1.6T? Because, I’d really want one

I think this is supposed to have a regular old trunk, the rear window is just really raked to look more coupe-like. In regards to the Rio, though it’s on a new platform I think the front end was shortened to increase interior space so there isn’t enough room for the turbo 1.6L and everything needed to keep it cool and reliable. If a Rio GT does appear it would have a reworked turbo 3-cyl.

I think the Stonic is in the same boat. It’s not actually a twin to the Hyundai Kona, it’s more like taking the Rio platform and making a crossover the same size as the Soul. The Hyundai Kona is between an Accent/Rio and Elantra/Forte like the Veloster and setup for all the cool 4-cyl engines and hybrid/electric setups. I have a feeling the next gen Kia Soul will be setup like the Kona which means AWD is coming.
