That article on the FP about loud exhausts is an absolute disaster. Link to context

FP is a disaster. Dorky hipster wikipedia-schooled “editors” and youtube commenters.

V8 exhausts are good, but I have heard enough braaap drone to last a lifetime, and small man syndrome diesel truck roar is up there too.

I wasn’t expecting that many people to be heated about how loud a car’s exhaust is. Especially the ones saying *anything* louder than stock should be fined. Enthusiasts are getting to be an odd bunch.

Still putting a Borla S-Type cat-back on the Silverado tho.

There’s a not so fine line between performance exhausts and “fuck you, I’m loud” exhausts that I’m not sure I could adequately explain to the average simpleton.

I’m honestly confused what such people are doing on a car enthusiast website.

What on earth are said simpletons doing on a car enthusiast website though?

I just don’t get how that kind of people became so prevalent on a car enthusiast website.

I dig my 4cyl exhaust though.

I can totally understand there being such thing as too loud (though my personal limit will probably make my ears bleed before I get annoyed), but a quality exhaust setup that makes it a little louder and sound a lot better aren’t a bad thing at all.

I do have a slight thing against Harley/sport bike guys who feel the need to rev their loud ass bikes at every stop sign though.

Yeah, that’s why I call it the troll page :p

But to be fair, the no H-pipe isn’t the greatest setup in a V8. The H-pipe will give you more power and better sound. Do you have a clip of the Jag? ;)

And as a burner said itt, a good exhaust will sound awesome. But a cheap eBay exhaust will sound like shit with no power gains or anything.

Not braaapy, nice.

The dbags in my area keep it 2 gears too low and drive through densely populated areas, thinking someone cares.

Yeah, I need to get around to having an H-pipe put in but... the car needs to not knock first lol.

it depends on degree. I had Flowmaster Force IIs on my Mustang GT which sounded good but weren’t really “loud” unless I got on it; which I never did within my neighborhood. I also have a Vance & Hines slip-on on my Harley, but since I still have the stock header pipes and catalytic converter it too only gets somewhat loud if I get on it. I haven’t done anything to my FZ-09 yet because there isn’t anything yet which isn’t a complete header-to-tailpipe replacement.

On the other hand, you have these 18-year-old dicknozzles who think everyone wants to hear their sick cat and muffler deletes constantly. they can go to hell. That’s not being an “enthusiast,” it’s being an asshole. Like a few months ago I was sitting at a red light, and TylerAnthonyZach McCockgobbler was in the next lane constantly revving his Gixxer because we all were begging to have our eardrums assaulted by his barely-muffled, race-only Akrapovi exhaust.

Most car “enthusiasts” are simpletons unfortunately, and I don’t think you can really call Jalopnik an enthusiast site anymore, maybe a car culture site.

H Pipes make 0 more HP than straight pipes. dyno proven. H-pipes and X pipes do change the sound, but they are mostly auto aftermarket marketing wank.

My favorite are people who still believe that an engines “needs some backpressure” to make peak torque and horsepower.

Huh, i guess these guys know something I dont...

Are they wrong? I had noticeably less power in my natural aspirated car when my exhaust terminated after the cat for a few months. Sounded fantastic but yeah... Not worth the lack of oomph. A quality catback fixed the problem immediately. Is that not back pressure related, or are you just talking about forced induction where the more flow, the better?

It’s a Flowmaster designed specifically for 4 and 6 cylinder cars with an emphasis on not being braapy, which is why I bought it. Sounds very OEM if you didn’t know any better. One of my favorite mods.

An exhaust that flows the wrong combination of freely and the wrong length will result in backpressure waves colliding wrong and actually restricting the exhaust more than a smaller, restricted exhaust.

Yes and no. Someone on here explained it way better, but too free of an exhaust causes more back pressure because the gas moves to slowly in it.

It’s more complicated than that obviously, but your correct and it’s also correct that too free of exhaust is bad.

Jake, this applies mostly to the first 18 inches of pipe after the collector, which is based on the scavenging effect, which is all about exhaust velocity. Beyond that, it really doesn’t matter how big the pipe is or if there is no pipe at all. Most factory exhaust manifolds are going to put more than enough necessary back pressure into the system. It’s extremely rare, that any factory exhaust loses power with the removal of restriction aft of the downpipe so long as the ECU or carb is retuned to handle it. Even on a 427 big block Chevy you will lose 0 torque and horsepower going from 1 3/4 inch primary tubes to 2 1/4 inch primary tubes, so long as you use a collector extension. The concept that you need backpressure in any appreciable amount to make power is auto magazine marketing wank. As shown by every dyno test I have ever seen.

That’s the way to do it. Your car doesn’t appear to be offensive or flamboyant.

When I had a W210 E55 AMG as my DD, I removed the resonator and installed an x-pipe, which made it a little louder at cold start, and maybe a minor drone at speed. It felt better that way, to me. Otherwise, I haven’t owned a car with exhaust mods, although as I get older, my cars become more grandfatherly, and don’t need it.

I live on a hill, which might make me more sensitive to the exhaust bros. I can live the rest of my life with never hearing another modified WRX, Evo, clapped out Miata or S2K, M3 etc and be happy.

Haha - mine’s not that loud once it’s warm, and the drone is manageable, too. I do second-guess myself every once in a while, though.
