I haven’t driven it in a while. It is neither truck nor car, far from the modern crossover experience. Do you remember those early SUVs? Toby is not sure about this car. I miss my Sunchaser.

Toby and I are waiting for CaptDale and his mom, who will be having lunch with us.

What year is that? It looks like a mixture between the interior of my old explorer, 1997, and my sister’s, 2002.

It’s an explorer with the back chopped off and made into a short bed like a Subaru Baja.

Back when the Sport Trac sold, the regular pickup truck market wasn’t as heavily skewered towards double cab models over single or extended cab, so this supposedly offered a shorter (more maneuverable - 210 inches/17.5 feet long) option for people looking for a double cab.

Now, people just don’t give a shit about the size and buy $70,000 full-size double cabs extending a full 20 feet.

Basically an Explorer/Ranger mashup, right? I’ve driven those two but never a Sport Trac- presume it’s a pretty truck-like experience—

I don’t understand why people spend that much on vehicles that are a pain to park.

Ford’s way of making a crew cab Ranger and the reason the S10 crew cab became a thing right at the end of the S10's life cycle.

The Ranger crew cab did exist, just not in the US.

My dad had one in red, the bed was just big enough to fit all 3 dirtbikes with the tailgate down. The 6 CD changer was basically the coolest thing you could ask for in a vehicle as far as us kids were concerned, and we no longer had to sit in the Ranger’s shitty jumpseats. However, it was the V6 4x4 and not very good on gas, so he sold it once gas started getting pricey.

My car crapped out on me recently and I’ve been driving my brother’s 2003 Ford Explorer Sport. Ugh I hate that thing. It’s uncomfortable and sluggish. Gets me around so I can’t be but so mad at it but it’s not something I would’ve ever chosen to own.

The problem being the little stubby beds on things like this have very limited appeal. I mean at least considering how I use my 4Runner I normally appreciate the fact it has a roof over the cargo area when I’m using it for normal SUV things, like a mixture of carrying people and stuff. When I need to carry something bulky I can see the appeal of a normal pickup but can usually get by folding the seats down and being creative. In a Sport Trac you can’t fold the seats down so the bulky stuff that can get wet doesn’t fit at all and the bed isn’t weatherproof, unless you get a tonneu further impacting how much you can fit so gear and stuff is out in the elements. I just don’t get it, I feel like the only appeal is if you typically need to carry 5 people and something gross you wouldn’t want to put in a normal Explorer, but not very much of the gross so an F150 would be excessive. Like who is this person?

I get a small double cab pickup with like a 5.5 foot bed or something but these literally had a 4 foot long bed, what do you even use that for?

I had a 2009 Ranger, and the entire design of the dash (and the inside of the doors) was exactly the same as my mom’s 1997 Explorer except for the gauge cluster.

It’s body on frame, pretty much just an out-dated explorer chassie extended, not much to it. Personally, if you were to buy one for cheap enough in good condition it’s a very capable setup. It won’t set the world on fire but it will tow similar amounts to the Ranger and sit 4.5 humans.

Poor example. I see more big trucks parked in a single space than BMWs.
