The signs tell me that a family of mice have moved into the garage, so I asked my wife to pick up some mouse traps.

Kinja'd!!!

Someone must have overheard our conversation and put the word out to the other woodland creatures. I found this guy slithering through our back yard yesterday.

Kinja'd!!!

Yeah, that’s the real deal. Water moccasin, or cottonmouth, depending on where you grew up. This little bugger can deliver a nasty bite and is best left alone. I asked him to pose for a couple of pictures, but he made a beeline for the back fence. I wasn’t going to argue about it and just let him go.

Hoo boy, I remember running into those on trails as a lad in Virginia. I was glad to never see any in our back yard, though.

You might want to try Clarkson’s approach to gardening and use a shotgun.

Oh dear. I had a roommate from North Carolina who told us fun stories about cottonmouths.

I found one in our backyard last year. I couldn’t find any shotgun shells, so I unloaded a clip in it.

I don’t own a shotgun, so I’d have to shoot it with some .308s

My shotgun blew itself in half, so I was looking for shells for my Dad’s.

I find .410 shells with small shot to be excellent for both mice and venomous snakes. If it had been non venomous I’d say invite him to a buffet in the garage, but that’s a bit to close to cats and kids for comfort with that guy.

I’d call that a fine excuse to need to buy a shotgun or pistol capable of firing shotshells.

Alternatively, Aguilar makes (or at least used to) shot rounds for .308 rifles.

Or get an AR that shoots 410 shotgun shells. Well apart from the fact that I don’t really like ARs.

I’m in the same boat. I have several old military rifles and sometimes think an AR would be a nice addition since they’re comparatively inexpensive to shoot, but they just don’t interest me.

I do still want to get a couple more shotguns though.

I’ve got a HK91. Need to go shoot that soon.

What I want is an AK-74 with a milled receiver, since 5.54x39 is super cheap.

I wouldn’t consider myself a gun nut. I’ve got 4, but 2 of those were given to me. My granddad gave me his gen 2 Glock 19, and when I bought the HK91 from my dad, he gave me a Russian M44 as well.

I have quite a few, but I inherited the bulk of them because my brothers wife wouldn’t even let him have a BB gun.

For awhile I was trying to get something representative of each major player in WW2 while they were still cheap. That ship has sailed though.

An M-44 was the first of those I bought because at the time you could find them for $40-50.

I was happy to escort him out of the yard. It’s time to trim back the shrubbery where he was hiding. Then he won’t feels so welcome.

I think my dad paid like $60 for it.

Although we do need to trim back the plant life which he found so inviting, I’m happy to have him leave of his own accord.

Besides, I didn’t have enough time to go get the shotgun. If I really wanted him dead, I’d have just run over him with the lawn mower. It was the noise of the mower that flushed him out in the first place.

I have a couple of shotguns, but I’m thinking of trading one in for a double barrel side-by-side. If I had a good place to go plinking, I’d pick up a .22.

I have both a 12 gauge and 16 gauge side by side. They probably get more use than any other shotguns I own. I have a couple pump shotguns but only really use one of them and only for waterfowl hunting.

I’d like to get a 12 gauge autoloader and a 28 gauge in either a side by side or over under.

My inlaws have several very large farms and there’s a pretty nice shooting area set-up in a hilly area between a couple of them. There are three target areas where you can shoot as far as 75 yards, but we typically shoot pistols at shorter distances.

I have a ‘68 Remington 12 ga pump that was my grandfather’s and a mossberg 12 ga tactical that was my mom’s (!). My favorite was an ancient 12 ga side-by-side that belonged to a friend’s grandpa.

A friend of mine is a gunsmith. He recommended the Academy house brand for an inexpensive waterfowl gun. They are made in Turkey, but based on a much more expensive manufacturer’s design. I’m not a gun guy, so I can’t remember which one he said it was. Maybe Benelli?

Either way, he told me not to use my old Wingmaster with modern steel shot. There’s a spring in the receiver that can’t handle it and will break. Replacing it requires drilling through the side, forever changing the appearance.

I’m tempted to get a long barrel for the mossberg, but it’s so light, it kicks like a mule. It’s not a fun gun to shoot.

My side by sides are both old sporting goods store house brands; the 12ga from the 60's and the 16ga from the 50's. I used to goose hunt with a 10ga side by side made by Churchill, but between being a 10ga and having 36" barrels I just got tired of carrying it and traded it to a friend recently.

I have a Stevens bolt action, single shot .410 that my grandfather bought when he was 12 in 1940.

For pumps I have a 20ga and 12ga Ithaca model 37. The 20 was my go to grouse gun for years because of the weight and bottom ejection but grouse hunting isn’t very good in my area so I haven’t been in awhile. I also have a Mossberg 835 which is my waterfowl gun at the moment.

I have a bolt action slug gun because I live in a state where you have to deer hunt with shotguns using slugs, but I have switched to bow and black powder so I’ll probably sell it at some point. I’ve offered it to a buddy that has an auto loading 28ga as partial trade, but so far he hasn’t taken the bait.

You have some interesting guns! Bolt-action shotgun? Bottom-ejecting? Huh. Never heard of such things.

Both Ithaca and Browning have done bottom eject pumps. Browning still does but I think Ithaca has gone out of business for the third or fourth time.

It’s nice when I’ve used them at trap ranges because the empties land at your feet instead of flying towards your neighbor.

Maybe one of these days I’ll add a Winchester lever action shotgun to the stable to finish out the weirdness.

I took my kids to the range last fall. They learned why they shouldn’t stand to the shooter’s right. :)
