I’m glad now I got to see Steely Dan live a couple years back. Wonderful show, wonderful band. What a great loss. This hurts maybe more even than Bowie to me, Steely Dan was the first band me and my dad really bonded over and Aja is one of the only truly perfect albums ever made.

Aja is very strong. You may be too young to take Bowie’s passing very hard. His song “Blackstar” makes me weep. A monumental piece of music.

Oh, definitely. I was blown away when Blackstar first dropped and his death brought a whole new context to the song that made it all the more powerful.

Bummed I never got to see them live. We used to have Steely Dan’s Greatest Hits and Aja in regular rotation in the Oldsmobile back in high school, just because it was such a great blend of jazz, rock and bizarre lyrics. Anyways, here’s my favorite:

That was a really strong performance. Lots of musicians. The pianist was a bit obnoxious. The backup singers are fascinating.

I’m torn between this and the album version - Royal Scam was pretty much a studio creation - hard to replicate live since it was when they didn’t tour and Becker and Fagen were such perfectionists. But something played live is always more enjoyable.

I listen to a live performance and I realize that it’s not the studio and I have two different experiences. When I originally posted Gaucho , I considered posting a live performance, but stuck with the studio track because it’s so crisp.

Now, having said all of that , nowadays, vocalists’ tracks get pitch corrected and they don’t really sing at all. It’s all fakery.
