I’d drive it. But I wouldn’t want to be seen in it, or ever have to look at it myself

Nice color, and it sounds like a great power train. However, everything around it is crap, and I’d have to wear a mask to drive it and take out every mirror so that I couldn’t even see myself in it.

I’m sure the torque steer is also a wrist-breaker, so, like a lot of American cars, this car would only be decent in a straight line. Did I mention that I don’t like FWD? I drive a FWD car daily and I really wish it was RWD. No computers, with their fancy traction controls, are going to make FWD feel natural - sorry.

Are those the factory drum brakes I see?

by the look of it, yep.

That appears to be a very well done swap. I say NP.

Not that I want a mint green cavalier with a 60 degree V6.

Wait - he mated the 2.2 factory exhaust to the v6 engine, “for reliability”?

Yeah that makes sense.

I’m sure the torque steer is breath taking.

I read that part about the exhaust and thought the same thing.

My mom had that engine in her van, it wasn’t very powerful.

The interiors of these cars are truly hateful. Why would anyone do this?

torture chamber quality?

It could be entertaining as long as you ignore the despair of the J car interior, maybe?

And I almost think that it’s so front heavy, the rear drums aren’t a big deal - maybe.

True. But that car can only handle somuch power before torque steer is just too annoying. I once owned a 165 Hp j car, and torque steer in 1st gear was plentiful.

Maybe it’s enough to induce torque steer then.

Yeah, that’s a way to put it... Their interiors seemed to be disintegrating straight from the factory and the seats were even uncomfortable.

Probably. Mine was older (1990), maybe they upgraded the drive train a bit to reduce torque steer after that, but it’s GM, so not sure.

I thought the seats in my sister’s ‘03 were pretty comfortable. The rest of the interior was most certainly hot garbage though.

I am solidly in the I do not hate J-bodies camp, because they’re dirt cheap and reliable. I can’t wrap my head around why anyone would bother with this swap though. The 3.4 is a turd of a V6. The car will still be slow, still will drive and feel like a Cavalier, but now it will be a pain to work on and figure out what parts it needs.

Makes me wonder what it would have taken to get a 3800 in there (SC or otherwise)...

So they took the motor from a Grand Am, which while not the greatest thing GM ever made by a long shot, is far better than the J-body, lost the N-platform’s 4-wheel independent suspension, and probably spent far more than a mint condition Grand Am would cost to have a Cavalier with one of the most lackluster V6s made in the last 20 years?

There was just loads of logic behind this project.

Probably a lot more work. I know the 3.4 and the 3.8 have different bell-housing bolt patterns. Seems to me the best course of action to hop up a Cavalier, would be to build up the 2.2 ecotec. Those are stout little motors. Way better than the crap 2.2 they stuck in the S-10.

My brother owned one... The seats I remember had deep grooving and a most peculiar shape. They broke down quickly and ended up with seat covers by around 60k miles because the material was going from the added wear after the foam broke down.

As sad as it is, the seats were the high point of that interior.

On the other hand, it was a J-body, so it was a cockroach in that in spite of everything else being a mess, it still ran.
