To rent or to buy

So I got a lot of painting to do. Like 1700 square feel walls AND ceilings kind of painting to do. So the question isn’t why the hell am I not hiring out this horrible job, it is - do I rent gear or buy it?

I can rent a pro sprayer from the Home[less] De[s]pot for $400/wk. Or I can buy the same sprayer from their used department for $667.

Looks something like this

So...super overkill for anything other than painting a whole house by myself in 2 days. Anyone have any experience with these? Can they be used for body work? any other suggestions? I really don’t see a need to buy it if its just for big house jobs...I mean it would make painting my house in the future a much less tedious task but unless I can use if for things other than my house I don’t see the point.

Buy it then sell it

It’s a good point. If you can get more than $267 for the used one (I’m guessing you can), you’re better off buying it.

Buy it, use it, then build a medieval trebuchet to hurl into the ocean and charge people 5 dollars to come to the launch party.

I try to do this as much as possible, the price difference is usually pretty easy to overcome.

Only $7? It’s like $12.50 from my cards, all-told. Adding that in, it’s even less to break even.

I used to use one like that all the time at work. I really like those wheeled ones with the bucket hook and hose rack.

I’ve never run car paint through them though. You’d have to find out what pressure and tip size to use.

I’d rent it. You’ll probably get through the work way quicker than a week. Primed and painted the entire exterior of a small house in one day with one of these.

I’ve used one like the model pictured a few times if you have any questions.

Second thing that popped into my mind, right after hiring someone else to do the paint job.

The biggest problem I have with those is keeping it primed. I go through paint so damn fast. It also gets the coating done super fast. I spent a week getting my old house ready for paint and two hour to put a coat over the whole exterior.

I think I would do all the prep work and then rent the sprayer and do the whole house in one day for like a $75-100 rental fee.

I just bought a flooring nailer, but the nailer was $135 to buy and I need it for about 6-10 days at 30-40/day it makes sense to buy it. I intend on selling the nailer when I’m done with it for $100-120, since it is basically brand new and I will never use it again.

Medieval trebuchets really need to make a comeback.

You could sell it, but assuming you’re doing the exterior, might as well keep it. It will need to be done again every 5-7 years.

Based on where the OP lives, there is like a 1% chance he lives in a house that needs exterior painting and doesn’t own one of these already. I’ve never encountered an environment more destructive to houses than where he lives, which is why people side houses with something that can survive extreme temperature ranges, insects, etc. That is, they avoid vinyl (the environment eats it alive) and mostly use brick, aluminum, composite, & stone.

This has been on my Amazon wish list forever. I envision doing house painting and jeep painting, but probably would only do the former. Follow up with how it goes!
